Applied Psychology: Bachelor of Science

How many courses do I need to take? How long does this take?

The complete bachelor of science in applied psychology program is 31 courses (units) in duration. Each class lasts 7.5 weeks. You may transfer in a maximum of 15 courses (units) if you have previously taken classes.

Are students allowed to begin a new program? Or is this just for completing degrees?

Students are able to both start a program from scratch and complete their already in progress degree path.

Can I take these courses online?

Yes, courses are available in online asynchronous and synchronous format. You may also take the program face-to-face, if that is your preference, once COVID-19 restrictions pass.

How much does the program cost?

The price per course (unit) is $1500. This cost is inclusive; there are no additional fees. Books will be a separate cost.

When can I start?

There are multiple opportunities throughout the year to begin undergraduate programs in the School of Professional Studies: Fall 1 and 2, Spring 1 and 2, and Summer 1.

What should I know about the psychology program?

Albright’s applied psychology bachelor’s degree features a diverse curriculum that will prepare you for careers in social services, nonprofits, and corporate training. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics projects significant growth in the field of psychology from 2014 to 2024: 22% increase in substance abuse counselors & behavioral disorder counselors; 7% increase training & development specialists; 19% increase in psychologists, and 72,600 new substance abuse & behavioral disorder counselors, training & development specialists and psychologist jobs.

Albright’s applied psychology degree also provides a strong foundation for graduate school* because undergraduate research is built into the curriculum. Why? Because delving deeper into a particular area, students discover the process of how knowledge is acquired in a specific field, apply classroom learning in real-life contexts, develop close working relationships with faculty, and gain insight into making valuable contributions to a field of scholarly study. In the past 10 years, the School of Professional Studies has had 65 presentations of student-generated research given at state, regional and national professional conferences. Numerous publications authored by faculty/student partnerships have also been published.

*To be a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania, the state board of psychology requires completion of a doctorate program that is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA).

*Master’s degree recipients may be licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Pennsylvania if they meet the specified criteria as designated by the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors.

Albright College has established a number of regional articulation agreements with local colleges and universities to provide a seamless transfer into graduate school. These programs include a master’s in clinical and counseling psychology, master’s in the administration of human services and a master’s in organizational development and leadership. Learning Goals:
The Psychology Department follows the student learning outcomes from the American Psychological Association.

  1. Theory and Content of Psychology — Students will demonstrate familiarity with major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings and historical trends in psychology.
  2. Research Methods in Psychology — Students will comprehend and have the ability to implement basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis and interpretation.
  3. Critical Thinking Skills in Psychology — Students will gain appreciation for and engage in critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry and, when possible, employ the scientific approach to problem solving related to behavior and mental processes.
  4. Application of Psychology — Students will know and be able to apply psychological principles to personal, social and organizational issues through community service experiences and student internships.
  5. Values in Psychology — Students will value empirical evidence, tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect other values that are the underpinnings of psychology as a discipline. (APA Guideline, Goal 5)
  6. Information and Technological Literacy — (A) Students will exhibit competence in information science assessed according to the ACRL Psychology Information Literacy Standards and (B) have the ability to utilize computers and relevant software programs necessary to function in an entry level professional position or in a graduate school program.
  7. Communication Skills — Students will demonstrate competence in effective interpersonal communication including written, verbal, and non-verbal forms. They will recognize, respect, and adjust to other people’s ways of communicating, learning, and doing things.
  8. Sociocultural and International Awareness — Students will recognize, understand and respect the complexity of sociocultural and international diversity, realizing it is impossible to fully understand a person without understanding her or his culture, ethnic identity, gender identity and other important sociocultural factors
  9. Personal Development — Students will develop insight into the behaviors and mental processes of themselves and others and be able to apply effective strategies for self-management and self-improvement.
  10. Career Planning and Development — Students will emerge from this program with realistic ideas about how to implement their psychological knowledge, skills and values in occupational pursuits in a variety of settings.
