Biography

As an artist and instructor I strive to impart something universal about art making, beyond medium or specific style and technique. When teaching a diverse body of artists whom have varying aesthetic priorities, I believe I must take what’s most important that I’ve learned through picture-making and translate it to other modes of art making. Conceptual and process-based art making ideas can add enormous depth or perspective on picture design. Workflow and tools of the digital world can inform our traditional process, and vice versa. Narrative art ideas can yield new modes of thinking within a purely fine art series. Sculptural decision making can lead us to question and discover why we choose our materials and forms within other modes of art making.

As a painter and visual storyteller, I allow story to drive my design decision making process. Whether working in traditional or digital media, I’m drawn to create vast landscapes and the characters who make these worlds worth exploring. Dynamic cinematography and the visual language of film, along with my study of Western painting, serve as a context for my ideas when creating new works.
