The Spanish minor at Albright College offers students the opportunity to build proficiency in Spanish and explore the languages, literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

About the Program

Designed to complement majors across the liberal arts, sciences, and professional disciplines, the Spanish minor combines structured language coursework with cultural and global perspectives. Students gain linguistic competence while developing an appreciation for historical and contemporary Hispanic cultures. Opportunities to connect study with real-world contexts — including approved cultural courses or study abroad experiences — help bridge classroom learning with global engagement.

Program Goals

Identify relationships between cultural practices, products, and perspectives as they play out in the literature, history, arts, and everyday life of the Spanish-speaking world.
Recognize the interdisciplinary nature of the study of world languages and cultures.
Analyze in writing and speech different types of written and spoken “texts” to which they are exposed.
Demonstrate spontaneous productive proficiency (speaking and writing) at intermediate high or advanced low level of the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.
Demonstrate spontaneous receptive proficiency (reading and listening) at advanced low or advanced mid level of the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency guidelines.
Compare and contrast their own cultures and the Spanish-speaking cultures they study.

Minor Requirements

Note: Students who begin higher than 101 will substitute courses placed out of with language or culture courses.

Classical Studies: in any order: 2 sequential courses of either Latin or Greek (e.g. 101&102 or higher); 3 culture or language courses
Spanish and Hispanophone Cultures: 101, 102, 201, 202, 301

Opportunities

Study Abroad Experiences: Students are encouraged to live and learn languages and cultures overseas through Albright's study abroad program, with faculty‑led and approved programs that let you earn credit while immersing yourself in Spanish‑speaking environments.

Internships and Career Support

Students can connect with the Career Development Center to find internships where they can apply language proficiency in real‑world settings, locally, nationally, or internationally, and these can count toward major requirements with faculty approval.

ACRE Undergraduate Research

Students in any major can engage in interdisciplinary undergraduate research through the Albright Creative Research Experience (ACRE), partnering with faculty mentors to pursue independent research or creative projects and present their work beyond the classroom.

Curriculum Highlights

Sequential Spanish language study: SPA 101, SPA 102, SPA 201, SPA 202, and SPA 301 (or equivalent placement)
One additional 300-level Spanish or Spanish-themed course to deepen cultural or linguistic understanding
Flexibility to integrate approved study abroad courses or culture-focused courses into the minor plan
