A Journey Home
“All of life’s best journeys should bring you back to where you started…”
A person dear to me recently shared this insight with me, and the sentiment is spot-on. In September 1978 I embarked on the independent part of my life’s journey at Albright College as a first-year student. Now, almost four decades later, I could not be more thrilled and honored to return to Albright as the College’s 15th president.
Much has changed in the intervening years at Albright College, and in Reading, our country, and our world. What excites me most, however, are those values that have not changed here: our shared commitment to educating students of academic promise, and the intentional engagement of our students with our talented and dedicated faculty and staff. This commitment and engagement form the core of our mission to develop and foster the habits of practice and of mind that will guide each of our students to a lifetime of service and learning.
As I return to the place where I started my journey, I fully recognize that I have much to learn about the Albright of 2017. Our faculty and our staff have continued to evolve the academic and co-curricular programs to meet the needs of 21st century students. We provide the very best of what higher education offers to both our traditional and non-traditional students. I am excited by these developments and the opportunities that they offer. I am eager to learn more about them.
Thus, I am embarking on a Year of Listening and Learning. For those of you who work here, learn here, or are otherwise engaged with our fine institution, I want to learn about your dreams and aspirations for Albright. I want to hear your thoughts about our greatest challenges. The most important thing we do is prepare students for lives and careers in the 21st century. Every single person on and off the Albright campus plays a role in this mission and I want to hear from each of you.
For those of you visiting us and discovering what Albright has to offer, I hope you take some time to visit our beautiful campus and learn about the opportunities (for example, our Albright Creative Research Experience program, ACRE) and outcomes our students enjoy.
I’m thrilled and proud to return to Albright College, to Reading, and to central Pennsylvania. As a direct beneficiary of Albright’s interdisciplinary educational model grounded in the liberal arts, I know from experience and observation the lifelong value that Albright offers. Together, we will build on the foundation that has been laid and forge Albright’s future together. I look forward to continuing my life journey, with you, here at Albright.
