How can I record a running class participation grade in Moodle?

If you grade class participation on a daily or even weekly basis, you can easily record those points and have them populate the Moodle gradebook. It’s done by configuring the Attendance module to record participation instead or in addition.

From the Gear icon at the upper right of your course page, choose Turn editing on.

Go to the section on your course page where you want the class participation module to appear. On the far right, click Add an activity or resource.

Click Attendance and click Add.

Change the Name to class participation. Under Grade, fill in the total number of points that participation will be worth for the semester. You’ll set the points per class meeting in the following steps. When you’re done, click Save and display. (If you clicked Save and return, you can navigate back to the participation module by clicking it on your course page.)

On the next screen, click add session. Then do the following:

If you want to record participation after each class session – Fill in the date of the first class meeting. Click the button to repeat the session above as follows. Place check marks next to the days your class meets (even if it just one day). Fill in the last day your class meets. Click Add.

If you want to record participation only at the end of each week – Fill in the date of the first class meeting. Click the button to repeat the session above as follows. Place a check mark only next to the last day of the week. Fill in the last day your class meets. Click Add.

Click Status set. Enter the descriptions, abbreviations, and corresponding point values you want to use in grading participation. At the bottom of the page, click Update. Note: you can also use the trashcans at the right to remove unused statuses.

Click Sessions to see all your class sessions. You may find it easiest to have them displayed by Week or Day. You can make that change at the upper right. To record participation, click on the right arrow to the right of the class meeting.

Click the appropriate circle beside each student’s name. A key to the abbreviations appears at the bottom left of the screen. When you finish, click Save attendance. You can go back into a day’s record at any time, make changes, and save again.

The student’s participation grade to date will appear in the gradebook. They can check their status for individual days by clicking Class Participation on the course page.

Note: By changing the status set, it is also possible to combine attendance and class participation into one grade. For example:

This is done simply by editing the status set and point values in an existing Attendance module.
