How can I use Kaltura video in my classes?

Kaltura’s video package for Moodle enables you to view, record, upload, publish, search, and share video directly from the Moodle environment. This can translate into improved student engagement, creativity and learning results. In addition it is easy to use for both faculty and students.

Upload and Record in your own Media Gallery

• Easy Video Uploading – Upload video using a simple interface into a particular course, at the Moodle main page level (if unsure which course the media will ultimately reside in), or into the Shared Repository to give all faculty access to your video.
• Create recordings – easily record the screen, along with audio and webcam feeds, to create and publish screencasts within Moodle. Instructors and students can record and share lectures, presentations (think PowerPoint), software tutorials, just to name a few ideas.

Creating Video Content

Kaltura provides a tool called Kaltura Capture for any user to capture video at their computer – students and faculty can access this tool. This can include webcam capture (talking head), audio only, screen capture (to demonstrate to students how to do something in software or on a website), or a narrated PowerPoint with or without a webcam.

Video that has been captured with other devices (mobile device, tablet, etc) and edited with other software (Camtasia, iMovie, etc) can also be uploaded into Kaltura. Kaltura Capture just provides a convenient tool for capturing and simple editing.

Kaltura usage in Moodle

Faculty can add a Kaltura Media Assignment, which requires students to submit videos for a grade. Kaltura is also available in discussion forums so video responses to discussion prompts can also be achieved by using Kaltura.

In addition, faculty can upload videos as a resource which students must watch by embedding on a Moodle page or as a stand alone Kaltura Video Resource item on the main course page.

Kaltura Analytics

Kaltura provides analytics for every video. The Media Gallery (course level) Analytics page provides different engagement reports for students enrolled in a course: Dashboard, Media, Engagement, and Contribution. The Kaltura administrator can also provide more detailed reports upon request.

Shared Repository

Kaltura provides an area in Moodle called the Shared Repository. Any video published into the Shared Repository from My Media (Institutional Level) is available to every user in Moodle.

Tips for using Kaltura Video at Albright

• Experiment!  You won’t break anything by playing with the tools – webcam recording, screen recording, and uploading local content.  Experiment with all the features of CaptureSpace. Try it out!
• Create!  Try creating instructional content for your courses.  You can make webcam recordings for announcements and discussion boards, you can create quick screencasts to illustrate a point or help explain course materials.
• Use accurate titles, descriptions, and tags – this helps you find your own media and will help other instructors find your shared videos in the Faculty Repository.
• All content you create will always be in your My Media (Institutional) module and available to publish within any course – you don’t need to add to the Shared Repository unless you want to share with other instructors.
• If you’re not using content anymore (or you were just testing/experimenting) delete it from your My Media
• Students can use these tools as well – they have access to everything except the Shared Repository. Students can submit video presentations, screencasts, video discussion boards, graded media assignments, and more.
