Karl Koch, Men’s Rugby Coach
Karl first found Rugby while attending Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania during his freshman year in 2001. Being a high school athlete, Karl was immediately drawn to both the social and competitive aspects of the game, he helped as a back-line player and executive board member. Karl helped ‘Rock Rugby’ to win the Allegheny Rugby Union multiple years with his most memorial moments include facing against University of Michigan in the national playoffs with a nationally ranked Rock Rugby. Karl graduated with a degree in Business Marketing and soon found himself working with a military contractor getting the opportunity to travel around the county. The traveling allowed Karl to join many US rugby clubs in Arizona and California, before making his way back to Pennsylvania where he eventually landed with Reading Rugby. Karl started coaching in 2019 with Phoenixville Whitehorse Youth Rugby, eventually leading to coaching with nationally ranked Berks County Rugby Club, Pennsylvania select-side Armageddon Rugby, and most recently joined Albright College Rugby Club as head coach later that year. That year Albright Rugby regained its winning tradition and finished the season undefeated as the NSCRO Silver Division Champions. Karl is also a trained and certified referee who enjoys personal fitness, coaching his own children playing rugby, along with working with young men as a mentor. “My goal is to coach Rugby as two parts. Part 1, we work hard as a dedicated team to grow our education in the sport and play competitive Rugby. Part 2, we work hard as a family, respecting and uplifting each other as good strong men. Rugby mirrors life, and just like in Rugby, we support each other while on this journey together.”
