About the Program

September Back to School Session: We are happy to announce our “Back to School Learn to Swim” session. Swimming is an essential life skill and its important to keep your children in the water even after summer is over.

General: The Albright College Learn to Swim Program has been one of the most successful in the Greater Reading area for ages 3 and up. We offer swim lessons for beginners as well as stroke development for more experienced students. Our Parent-Tot class for younger children allows parents to help their children become comfortable in the water.

Our programs are built carefully to ensure student success and positive outcomes. Beginner students will master floating on their back while kicking and sculling. Successful students will graduate to rotary freestyle swimming and more advanced stroke development. Whenever possible, each student will have one instructor, but increased enrollments may mean sharing an instructor, never to exceed a 3:1 student:teacher ratio. All sessions are staffed by qualified and knowledgeable instructors, including members of Albright’s own Varsity Swim Team.

*Currently NOT offering learn to Swim, parent-tot learn to swim, private swim lessons, or lifeguarding at this time.

Learn to Swim

Pre-Level 1 (3 & 4 yr olds) – Acclimate students to the pool and pool safety. Students will become comfortable entering the water without the assistance of a parent.

Level 1 (4 & 5yr olds) – Water Safety:  After this session student will be able to jump in, surface on back, swim (scull) across pool and exit pool without help of teacher.

Level 2 (Minis) – Graduates of Level 1 that are 5 & under. Their back swimming skills (safety position) will be enforced as we teach them to roll over onto their stomach into freestyle strokes.

Level 2 (Novice) Graduates of Level 1 that are 6 & Over. Their back swimming skills (safety position) will be enforced as we teach them to roll over onto their stomach into freestyle strokes.

Level 2 (High End) – Graduates of Level 1 that are able to show some appearance of front crawl stroke but cannot breathe bilaterally. To move to Level 3 children must be able to swim 20 yards of bilateral breathing freestyle.

Level 3 (Freestyle/Backstroke Endurance) – Introduces elements of treading water, freestyle, backstroke and diving skills. Building endurance and stamina are key to move to Level 4.

Level 4 (Stroke improvement – Backstroke/Freestyle) Develops technique and builds knowledge in freestyle and backstroke using refinement drills.  Level 3 completion required.

Level 5 (Stroke improvement – Butterfly/Breaststroke) Develops technique and builds knowledge in butterfly and breaststroke using refinement drills. Level 4 is not required but many children who do not plan on joining a swim team should have additional help in freestyle/backstroke in that it would be is more beneficial.
