Hard-working Albright students were celebrated during the college’s annual awards ceremony, Sunday, May 5. In addition, 15 members of the Albright College Class of 2019 were named lifetime Jacob Albright Scholars. Established in 1982, the Jacob Albright Society includes Albright graduates with a grade point average of 3.85 or higher, who have completed at least half their course work at the college. Class of 2019 inductees include:

Dr. Morgan S. Heller Memorial Chemistry Award
American Chemical Society Prize
Physical Chemistry Division of the ACS, Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry
The Morgan S. Heller Memorial Chemistry cash prize is given in memory of Professor Morgan S. Heller, awarded to a deserving senior concentrating in chemistry or biochemistry who demonstrates excellence in both academics and character. Preference is given to a student who plans to continue studies in one of these disciplines at the graduate level. And the recipient of the Physical Chemistry Division award demonstrates excellence in physical chemistry and related fields based on research and coursework, and is committed to a career in chemistry, broadly defined (e.g. research, education, industry, etc.). In addition, membership in the American Chemical Society awarded annually by the Lehigh Valley section of the society to the senior majoring in chemistry or biochemistry who is recommended by the department of chemistry on the basis of high standing in scholarship, personality, and character.

This award is given to a senior who has demonstrated outstanding ability either in biology or as a pre-medical student.

SGA Graduating Senior Award
This award is given to student government association members after three years of service on the basis of attendance at meetings, performance of assigned tasks, contact with groups represented, attitude and contribution to the association and to college life.

Albrightian Contributor of the Year award
This award recognizes Albrightian staff who have made outstanding contributions to the newspaper during the past year.

Samarvir (Sam) Sahi ’92 Outstanding International Student Award
Established in memory of Sam Sahi ’92, this award is given to an international senior student who exhibits extraordinary strength of character and intellect.

E. Michael Sheffer Award
This annual award is given to students who have completed two years of academic work, are pursuing a concentration program in history and participate in athletics.

CUE Special Recognition Award
Ray Mest ’62 Math Award
The CUE Special Recognition Award is presented to the editor(s) of the Cue from the Albrightian staff in appreciation of hard work. And the Ray Mest ’62 Mathematics Award is given to an outstanding senior mathematics or math/combined concentrator chosen by members of the department. Recipients are considered based on scholarship, performance, leadership and dedication in their pursuit of a mathematics education.

Ed Flagg and M. Cornelius Trayes Award in Journalism: Photography
This award is given for excellence in journalistic writing, editing and photography. Selection is based on published work in campus and other publications and recipients are selected by the chair of the English Department on the recommendation of faculty.

The Mr. and Mrs. John C. Lanz ’37 Endowed Academic Award
This award was established by Mrs. Kathryn Lanz in honor of the memory and life of her late husband, John C. Lanz, Class of 1937. The recipient of the award is a freshman, sophomore or junior majoring in either Mathematics or Education, who demonstrates strong academic accomplishment in either discipline and participation in student life.

Lewis E. Smith Political Science Award
Maltzer (Pre-Law) Award
The Lewis E. Smith Political Science Award is given to a student in the field of political science who has demonstrated academic competence in that discipline and who is committed to high personal and social values. This award is provided by Mrs. Lewis E. Smith to honor her husband’s labors as a student and teacher of political science and his lifelong commitment to the academic and spiritual development of the students of Albright College.

Joshua T. Carmon
Louis D. Pepe Memorial Accounting Award
This award is presented to a senior accounting major with a cumulative B average or better in accounting who has shown the greatest improvement in accounting between his or her first year and the end of his or her seventh semester, and exhibits the strongest desire to become a CPA.

Marcus H. Green Pre-professional Award
Psychobiology Award
The Marcus H. Green Pre-Professional Award is given by the Alpha Epsilon Delta Society to a senior pre-professional student in health sciences who has demonstrated the characteristics of perseverance, compassion and humility. And the Psychobiology Award is given to a senior who has shown overall excellence in psychobiology and shows promise of making future contributions to the field, in honor of Marsha Green and Ronald Green who founded the Psychobiology degree at Albright College in 1970.

Philip A. Eyrich Memorial Award
This award is presented by the Political Science Department of Albright College in recognition of Professor Eyrich’s outstanding contributions as a teacher and college leader, this award goes to a senior political science concentrator who has demonstrated interest, achievement, and commitment towards international understanding and peace.

Albrightian Contributor of the Year Award
This award recognizes Albrightian staff who have made outstanding contributions to the newspaper during the past year.

Alexandria L. Close
Josephine E. Raeppel Award
This award is given to a senior library assistant by the Phi Delta Sigma Alumnae sorority, in honor of Dr. Josephine Raeppel.

Justine M. Cooper
Silver Snips Award
This award is presented to the costume student who has shown outstanding progress in their skill sets in period costume construction and tailoring.

Emily Anne Curley
Professor Clyde Harding Award for Outstanding Scholarship in English and Communications
Income from a fund created by friends and family, including the estate of Ruth Hall Harding, provides scholarship assistance for students pursuing the English concentration or the Communications Program. The award is available to juniors and seniors who maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Kelchner Memorial Award
The gift of the late Charles S. Kelchner, this prize is awarded by the English Department faculty to honor students who are outstanding in both oral and written communication.

This award recognizes the top chemistry or biochemistry concentrators in general chemistry.

Sharyce Dey
The Ashley Adams ’05 Study Abroad Scholarship Award
In the spring of 2008, the Department of World Languages and Cultures established the Ashley Adams Study Abroad Memorial Scholarship in honor of a promising Albright alumna with co-concentrations in Spanish and political science. Ashley Adams, who graduated summa cum laude in 2005, was passionate about defending the rights of all and learning about other peoples. During her college years, Ashley traveled to the Dominican Republic to participate in a three-week interim experiential learning course. She founded and was president of Albright College’s Society for Human Rights. Her goal was to become a human rights lawyer. Ashley was passionate about life, with a fire in her soul that pushed her to attain any goal she set for herself. We believe that the recipients of this scholarship embody Ashley’s passion, fire and motivation in pursuit of their goals to experience another language and culture.

This cash award is presented to a senior in one of the business tracks, (accounting, economics, management, marketing, finance, business, and international business), who excels academically and who demonstrate the potential for professional leadership.

Ella M. Schaeffer Music Award: Vocal Music
Gold A Award
The Alumni Graduation Award is given to the senior who throughout his or her college life has made the greatest contribution to Albright through enthusiastic participation in academic, social, and religious activities, and who has been most influential in fostering and promoting aims and objectives of the college. And the Gold A Award rewards outstanding leadership in campus activities other than athletics, and for contributions to the intellectual, literary, musical, artistic and/or social life of the college. Students are chosen who have enriched the cultural life of the college and promoted a more congenial atmosphere. In addition, the Communications Department Faculty Award acknowledges strong and consistent scholarly achievement of a senior Communications major or co-major, and the Ella M. Schaeffer Music Award is given to a senior student for outstanding talent and leadership in Music.

Allen McKenney, III, Memorial Fund Award
This cash award is given to a student who makes a significant contribution to the larger community using knowledge and skills learned in the study of the social sciences.

Alma A. Felix
Commuter Students Association Award and the CURA Award
The Commuter Student Award is given to a non-resident student in his or her last year of attendance at Albright College who is in good academic standing, and who, through excellence of character and active participation, has made the most worthy contribution to the Commuter Student Association. The word “Cura” stems from the Latin, meaning “care” and the Cura Award recognizes the student who has demonstrated significant service to charitable organizations, Albright College, and the community. Established by Col. Frederick A. Muhlenberg, the Muhlenberg Goodwill Prize Award is presented to a senior who has demonstrated, through responsible action in college activities, a concern that extends to the larger community, and who has shown promise for further accomplishments that will better society.

Drs. Richard and Fredericka Heller Award
Provided by Dr. Richard Heller, a long-time biology faculty member, and his wife, Dr. Fredericka Heller, a long-time supporter of Albright College and the biological sciences, this award is given to students majoring in biology or environmental science who demonstrate high academic achievement and promise in future scholarship.

American Institute of Chemists: Chemistry Award
This award honors seniors majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry and is given in recognition of a demonstrated ability, leadership and professional promise. Candidates are chosen and nominated by the chemistry and biochemistry faculty.

Annadora Shirk Readers Theatre Award
A cash award given to recognize the contributions of Albright Readers Theatre to the campus and to the Reading community. Presented to the student whom the English Department faculty chooses to honor for his or her communications skills in and out of the classroom.

This cash award is presented to a senior in one of the business tracks, (accounting, economics, management, marketing, finance, business, and international business), who excels academically and who demonstrate the potential for professional leadership.

Established by friends and family in memory of Lisamarie Cope Class of ‘02, this award is given to a student, who exemplifies Lisamarie’s commitment to helping women in poverty or victims of domestic violence through community service or career choice.

Department of Theatre Award
This award recognizes outstanding work in theatre classes by a student completing a concentration or combined concentration in theatre.

Maria F. Garcia
POLYED Undergraduate Award for Achievement in Organic Chemistry
This award is given to honors undergraduate students at the sophomore/junior level for outstanding performance in the first two semesters of organic chemistry. It is sponsored by the American Chemical Society Joint Polymer Education Committee (POLYED) and the Industrial Sponsors of the division of Polymer Chemistry to call students’ attention to the field of polymer chemistry.

William E.C. and Mary Dearden Chair in Business Administration Scholars Award in Economics
This cash award is presented to a senior in one of the business tracks, (accounting, economics, management, marketing, finance, business, and international business), who excels academically and who demonstrate the potential for professional leadership.

Christopher L. Gaskins
Edwin R. and Regina L. Joseph Commencement Award
Established by a bequest from Franklin R. Joseph ’57, this endowed commencement award provides an annual cash award to a graduating Albright College senior receiving a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with strong academic accomplishment. Recipients of this award shall be selected by the Chair of the Economics and Business Department in consultation with faculty from the Economics and Business Department as appropriate.

This award is presented to those fashion seniors who exhibit excellence in leadership, scholarship, talent and service to the Albright Community.

Benjamin H. Handorf Chemistry Award and the Division of Inorganic Chemistry: Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry
The Benjamin H. Handorf Chemistry cash award is offered to the senior concentrating in chemistry or biochemistry whose honesty and integrity is unquestionable and who has demonstrated excellence of scholarship in all college subjects, a reasonable degree of professional interest and activity, and desirable attitudes and initiative. The Morgan S. Heller Memorial Chemistry cash prize is given in memory of Professor Morgan S. Crime and Justice Achievement Award
This award is given to a criminology student who has demonstrated academic excellence, a high degree of professional interest, and whose attitudes and initiatives are exemplary of professionals throughout the criminal justice system. This award is given in remembrance of the individuals who, in the face of gravest personal danger, displayed courage, selflessness and professionalism on September 11, 2001.

Katelin M. Gladback
Evelyn Boquist Kemp & Esther Boquist Strauch Memorial Award
This award was established in memory of Jean Tshundy’s aunts, Evelyn Boquist Kemp and Esther Boquist Strauch, whose parents emigrated from Uppsala, Sweden to the United States through Ellis Island in the late 1800’s. Their generosity makes it possible for Donald and Jean Tshundy to fund an award on behalf of their daughter-in-law, Marilou (Holland) Tshundy, who graduated from Albright College in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in social welfare. This award is given to a junior or senior majoring in social welfare, social work, sociology, or any other area in the social sciences, who is maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.

This award is given to the senior Music Business student who evidences passion, perseverance, and outstanding leadership in music-centered events on campus and in professional associations in the music industry. This individual possesses the extraordinary enthusiasm, drive and creativity needed to succeed in this highly competitive and rewarding career.

AGON Creative Writing Award
This cash prize is awarded to a writer in the senior class by the advisor and board of AGON, the college’s literary magazine.

Albrightian Contributor of the Year Award
This award recognizes Albrightian staff who have made outstanding contributions to the newspaper during the past year.

WXAC Radio Station Senior Award
This certificate is given to students involved in WXAC in appreciation for their dedication and hard work.

Natalie Olson Memorial Award
Outstanding Service to Psychology Department
The Natalie Olson Memorial Award is given to a Resident Assistant for his or her outstanding contributions to resident life at Albright College. It is in memory of Natalie Olson, Class of ’85, who inspired us with her vivacious personality, gentle strength of character, and enthusiastic commitment to serve and excel. The Outstanding Service to the Psychology Department Award is given to student who, through exemplary service to faculty and students, supports the department in providing a quality academic experience in the field of psychology.

Paul M. Leininger Chemistry Award
A cash award given by Craig B. Pearson, M.D., Class of ’65, in honor of Paul M. Leininger, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, this award is given to a junior or senior who has demonstrated excellence in the study of chemistry and who possesses outstanding personal characteristics of idealism, altruism and integrity.

Established by friends and family in memory of Ellery B. Haskell, this award is given to two students whose academic performance has demonstrated the highest standards of critical thinking, scholarly dedication, and moral idealism.

This cash prize is given to a graduating history senior at Albright College who has a strong academic accomplishment in the discipline, been a generous participant in the life of the college, and shown a compassionate concern for the needs of others.

This award is presented to an Albright student in recognition of scholastic excellence in computer science and for leadership in fostering a better understanding of the vital relationship of information processing to present and future societies.

Early Childhood Student Teaching Award
The Rose Sack Social Work Award
The Early Childhood Student Teaching Award is given to a student who excels in the Early Childhood Education Program. The Rose S. Sack Social Work Award is given to a student majoring in Child and Family Studies who has shown unusual promise for effective work in human services, who has demonstrated significant interest in the welfare of parents and children, and who has the interest and potential to positively influence the lives of others.

Conway Family Endowed Commencement Award
SGA Graduating Senior Award
Graduating seniors eligible for the endowed Conway Family Endowed Commencement Award demonstrate exceptional academic achievement (minimum grade point average 3.0) in economics/business, accounting and/or computer science. The SGA graduating Senior Award is given to student government association members after three years of service on the basis of attendance at meetings, performance of assigned tasks, contact with groups represented, attitude and contribution to the association and to college life.

Josh Laychock Award in Finance
This award is given to a junior or senior finance track student who has completed at least two of the following three finance track courses: BUS355, 485 and ECO313 and who has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 at the time of the award. Preference given to students with one or more of the following attributes: 1) participant in interscholastic athletics and 2) enrolled in a combined degree program in Business Administration and Political Science.

Graduating seniors eligible for this endowed commencement award demonstrate exceptional academic achievement (minimum grade point average 3.0) in economics/business, accounting and/or computer science.

Domino Player Award
Gold A Award
The Gold A Award rewards outstanding leadership in campus activities other than athletics, and for contributions to the intellectual, literary, musical, artistic and/or social life of the college. Students are chosen who have enriched the cultural life of the college and promoted a more congenial atmosphere. The Domino Players Award is given to an individual who has shown exceptional ability in one or more of the theatre areas and who has shown exceptional commitment to the production program.

The Campus Center Award is given to those seniors who have contributed greatly to the operation of the Office of Student Activities and the co-curricular programs sponsored by AC².

This cash award is given by the faculty of the Chemistry Department to a senior biochemistry or chemistry concentrator who demonstrates high academic achievement, leadership and excellence of character.

This award is presented to a senior pre-medical student who has demonstrated high academic achievement, compassion, and a strong commitment to community.

This prize is awarded to a senior that has demonstrated the ideals for which Alpha Sigma Phi stands, valuing the importance of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The recipient is chosen based on academic achievement and involvement in the Albright Community.

Albright Improv Award
This award recipient exemplifies what it means to be a great improviser — onstage and off. He or she is giving, supportive, attentive, committed … and probably pretty darn funny, too.

This cash prize is awarded to a staff member of the college’s literary magazine who has provided outstanding service during the academic year.

This award is given to an international student who is graduating this year with the highest grade point average.

This award is presented to a student who attains a high scholastic record in accounting subjects and demonstrates leadership during the college career.

The Biology Department Award
This cash award was established by the biology faculty and is given to a student majoring in biology though not intending a medical or para-medical career. The recipient shall be in good standing with the department, show academic promise, and anticipate graduate work in the biological sciences.

This annual award is given to students who have completed two years of academic work, are pursuing a concentration program in history and participate in athletics.

In the spring of 2008, the Department of World Languages and Cultures established the Ashley Adams Study Abroad Memorial Scholarship in honor of a promising Albright alumna with co-concentrations in Spanish and political science. Ashley Adams, who graduated summa cum laude in 2005, was passionate about defending the rights of all and learning about other peoples. During her college years, Ashley traveled to the Dominican Republic to participate in a three-week interim experiential learning course. She founded and was president of Albright College’s Society for Human Rights. Her goal was to become a human rights lawyer. Ashley was passionate about life, with a fire in her soul that pushed her to attain any goal she set for herself. We believe that the recipients of this scholarship embody Ashley’s passion, fire and motivation in pursuit of their goals to experience another language and culture.

Professor Clyde Harding Award for Outstanding Scholarship in English and Communications
Income from a fund created by friends and family, including the estate of Ruth Hall Harding, provides scholarship assistance for students pursuing the English concentration or the Communications Program. The award is available to juniors and seniors who maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5.

William E.C. and Mary Dearden Chair in Business Administration Scholars Award in Accounting
This cash award is presented to a senior in one of the business tracks, (accounting, economics, management, marketing, finance, business, and international business), who excels academically and who demonstrate the potential for professional leadership.

Grace Jones Award for Outstanding Early Childhood Education Student Teaching
Given in memory of beloved Albright colleague, Grace Jones, this award honors an exemplary elementary education teaching candidate. Recipient of the award displays evidence of high ethical standards, consistently professional interactions, and exemplary performance during competencies emphasized by Grace during her tenure as supervisor and instructor in Albright’s Teacher Certification Program.

Franklin Joseph Commencement Award
Established by a bequest from Franklin R. Joseph ’57, this endowed commencement award provides an annual cash award to a graduating Albright College senior receiving a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with strong academic accomplishment. Recipients of this award shall be selected by the Chair of the Sociology Department in consultation with faculty from the Sociology Department as appropriate.

Douglas B. Woolson Memorial Philosophy Prize
Ellery B. Haskell Memorial Award for Philosophy
The Douglas B. Woolson Memorial Philosophy Prize is given to a student in philosophy who has done substantial written work in philosophy courses, and who has exhibited a spirit of genuine inquiry in his or her studies. The prize is funded by an endowment established by family and friends in memory of Douglas B. Woolson, a philosophy major, Class of ‘88. The Ellery B. Haskell Memorial Award in Philosophy and Religious Studies was established by friends and family in memory of Ellery B. Haskell, and is given to two students whose academic performance has demonstrated the highest standards of critical thinking, scholarly dedication, and moral idealism.
