Scottish Genes, African Tapestry

Artress Bethany White, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of American cultural studies at Albright College, offers poetry and archival research on her personal ties to one of the largest slaveholding families in the nation, March 7 at 4:30 p.m., in the Center for the Arts, room 235.

Funded by a 2018 Albright College Summer Research Grant, “Scottish Genes, African Tapestry: Creating Poetry from History” touches on antebellum slave history, archival research on original historical documents and the historical value of literary production.

A poet, essayist and literary critic, White was the recipient of the 2018 Trio House Press Trio Award for her forthcoming poetry collection, “My Afmerica.” She is the author of “Fast Fat Girls In Pink Hot Pants.”

Her poetry appears in the Harvard Review, Poet Lore, Ecotone, The Account, Pleiades and Solstice. New essays, “Sonny Boy” and “A Lynching in North Carolina,” have been published in The Hopkins Review and Tupelo Quarterly.
