Procedures:

  • In order to facilitate communication between Shirk Scholars and the Volunteer Center, biographical information will be obtained annually during the fall semester by the end of the second week of classes. Group meetings will be scheduled to facilitate this process.
  • The Host Agreement Form must be completed and signed by a representative of the Berks County agency where you plan to volunteer. Please submit this form no later than the end of the fourth week of classes each semester. A form is required for each place you plan on volunteering.
  • Please submit the Shirk Scholar Community Service Report Form as you complete your service project(s), or by the last week of scheduled classes.
  • Please check your campus mailboxes and your email account (the email address that you indicated on your biographical information) on a regular basis for information regarding volunteer opportunities, bonus hours, or Shirk updates.

Policies:

  • A minimum of 25 hours of volunteer service must be completed in each academic semester. While we recommend completion of the hours during the regular academic semesters, please note the following exceptions:
    • Students may complete up to ten hours during Interim or summer sessions if they are enrolled in classes at Albright College.
      • Hours completed during Interim will be counted towards spring semester requirements.
      • Hours completed during the summer sessions will be counted towards the fall semester requirements.
    • Students not enrolled in classes may complete up to ten hours during Interim or summer sessions if prior written approval from the Director of the Volunteer Center or representative has been obtained.
  • Hours may not be completed on campus. Community service hours must be completed in the Reading or Berks community. Fundraising and other student organization's activities conducted on campus will not count for Shirk Hours.

    Exceptions:
    • Activities hosted on campus by the Volunteer Center.
    • Albright College Child Development Center
    • Student organization's activities off campus can be counted.
  • Failure to comply with these procedures and policies could result in the loss of the scholarship.
