| Sylvan Pond is getting a complete makeover made possible by a very generous gift from
alumna, Rosemarie Machmer ’49. Mrs. Machmer made her gift in memory of her husband, the late Richard Machmer, and her son, the late Chris Machmer, a graduate of the Class of 1974. Rosemarie and Dick Machmer established a generous scholarship fund in Chris’ memory several years ago.
Funding for the renovation also came from many smaller gifts made by recent graduates of the College.
The renovation includes a total transformation of the space with new trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as newly paved walkways. The pond has a new water feature making it much safer for the inevitable ponding.
Albright also began to fulfill its goal of improved walkways all across campus with the help of the Senior Walkway Legacy Program. Walkways in the pond area have been repaved through the outstanding generosity of members of the Classes of ’03, ’04, ‘06 and ’07. The names of those who gave $100 are inscribed on the pavers.
Sylvan's second phase of renovations, which must be coordinated with the construction of the new Albright College Science Center, will include adding a small amphitheatre or outdoor classroom space and a new handicap access to Science Hall.
The pond renovation is one of many campus improvement projects in progress. It is an exciting time to be at Albright!
