Emergency Response Short List

For ANY Emergency – generally,

  • Try to remain CALM.  Do not panic others.
  • Contact the Department of Public Safety immediately – 7670
  • Assist in the evacuation of students.  Public Safety will advise relocation site.
  • Remember that in a crisis cell phones can be unusable due to the cell system becoming overwhelmed.
  • At relocation site, assist in student accountability.

BOMB THREAT

  • If you receive the call, keep caller on phone.  Gain as much information as possible; use official bomb threat form if possible.  Ask caller for the LOCATION of the bomb.
  • Remain CALM.
  • Immediately notify Public Safety – 7670 – do NOT use cellular phones.
  • Instruct others not to use cellular phones.
  • Public Safety will advise in person the location of evacuation.
  • Avoid evacuation locations where a secondary device could be deployed (trash cans, cars, etc.)

EVACUATION

  • If need to evacuate is apparent, DO SO IMMEDIATELY. Earthquakes - avoid buildings; Tornadoes - seek basements.
  • Contact Public Safety – 7670
  • Public Safety will direct occupants to pre-determined location, as per master Emergency Response Plan.
  • IF PERSONAL EFFECTS( briefcase, purse, etc.) ARE NOT WITH YOU, DO NOT RETURN FOR THEM.
  • Caution those evacuating – not to run.
  • Assist, if possible, with handicapped.
  • Assist with student accountability.

FIRE

  • If a fire is observed– pull fire alarm, if able.
  • Close all windows and doors upon exiting.
  • Direct persons out of building immediately – advise “Do not run.”
  • If possible, assist handicapped or advise emergency responders to help.
  • Public Safety will be on scene and will announce, via bull horns, the evacuation location. Proceed to a safe designated location, remain so that all can be accounted for.
  • Do not allow persons back into building.
  • When fire department arrives on scene, they are in charge.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

  • If observed, notify Public Safety – 7670.
  • Advise exact location of spill.
  • If the substance is known – provide to Public Safety.
  • Avoid contact or contamination and advise others to avoid area.
  • Determine if evacuation is necessary – instruct others to leave building. When in doubt evacuate.
  • If necessary, Public Safety will advise of evacuation locations.
  • If outdoors, stay 300 feet from concentration until it can be identified.
  • Stay upwind of any possible contamination. When the fire department/HAZMAT arrive on scene, they are in charge.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

  • Call Public Safety immediately – 7670 – if Victim is:
    • Unconscious
    • Having difficulty breathing or not breathing
    • Bleeding profusely
    • Complaining of chest pains
    • Having a seizure
  • Attempt to comfort Victim. Is the scene safe for you?
  • If you are certified and can apply First Aid or AED – proceed as needed.
  • If applying medical attention, use protective equipment.

MISSING PERSON

  • Periodically, students have been reported missing to Public Safety – 7670.
  • Public Safety may contact Professors to determine the last time the student was in class.
  • If you have observed unusual behavior from a student and the student has not been in class for several days, contact Public Safety immediately – 7670.  A discrete check will be made to determine if the student is safe.
  • Whenever the health or safety of a student is in jeopardy, FERPA regulations do not restrict the passing of information.

THREAT FROM PERSON

  • Quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect your life, evacuate – have an escape route and plan in mind;  hide out – hide in an area outside of the active shooter’s view; take action – only as a last resort and when your life is in imminent danger. 
  • Contact Public Safety immediately – 7670, give specific locations – building, office, room number, CALL BACK NUMBER.
  • If hiding out close and barricade, if possible, classroom door.

 

*Any emergency could be criminal in nature.  Therefore, it is imperative to remember that an emergency location could become a crime scene.  Attempts must be made to prevent contamination of the scene of an incident. (revised 08/10/2012)
