Middle States Review Team Gives Albright a Positive Report

Accreditation is perhaps the single most critical aspect of a college’s ability to operate, a process that encompasses critical examination of every aspect of the institution, from how well it carries out the mission to curriculum, student affairs, governance and financial stability. Albright is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities. The reaccreditation process occurs every 10 years.

A Middle States review team, made up of senior administrators and faculty from eight colleges and universities, and led by Dr. Audrey Doberstein, president emerita, Wilmington College (Del.), visited Albright in October 2006.

The College’s Middle States process was led by M. Karen Jogan, Ph.D., director of planning and assessment and professor of Spanish. A three-year assessment process involved teams of faculty, administrators, support staff and students from across the College who produced a 250-page Self Study Review that documented how well Albright met the 14 accreditation standards.

The committee found Albright to have met all 14 Middle States standards with no qualifications. President McMillan said, “I would call the report a ‘high pass,’ with lots of commendations and many constructive suggestions.”

The Review Team’s final report praised the College’s leadership and was impressed with the commitment of Albright’s trustees. It also made a point of acknowledging Albright’s campus community of individuals, well qualified both personally and professionally, who demonstrate a “remarkable” mutual sense of trust and commitment.

There were only three “recommendations,” or actions that must be addressed by the College prior to the next review team, McMillan said. The recommendations concerned developing a five-year financial plan; improving institutional assessment and linking assessment of student learning to institutional assessment; and how Albright categorizes the satellite locations in the Accelerated Degree Program.

“There remains much work ahead, many‘promises to keep,’” said McMillan. “But it was good to hear this very strong and hard-working team of external reviewers tell us that for the most part we are on the right track!”

A More Beautiful Campus – As Easy as ABC!

Dottie McMillan, who is heading up the Albright Beautification Committee, sits outside the Campus Center making holiday wreaths to be hung on doorways across campus.

Albright’s campus is already beautiful, but a committee of volunteers led by Albright’s first lady Dottie McMillan, has plans to make it even more beautiful.

The Albright Beautification Committee (ABC), a new group created by President McMillan, is working to help Albright make a great first impression on everyone who visits and lives on campus by keeping a sharp eye on things that need repairs, cleaning and brightening, and to make campus spaces more inviting and comfortable.

ABC began as an advisory landscaping and grounds committee, and has expanded to include public spaces.

Work so far has included new plantings on campus and removal of poison ivy, clean windows on Selwyn Hall, seasonal wreaths and swags on campus doorways, the addition of Adirondack chairs, a refreshed lobby in the Administration Building and signs posted at each campus building that tell the building’s history. One of ABC’s current projects is redecorating the main lounge of the Campus Center to make it more comfortable for students.

ABC also encourages all faculty and staff to look at the campus with “newcomer’s” A More Beautiful Campus – As Easy as ABC! eyes, looking out for areas that are cluttered, need cleaning or repairs, and for old posters and flyers that need to be removed. “We’re hoping that ‘beautification fever’ happens all over campus,” said Dottie McMillan.

Albright Named to Barron’s Best Buys in College Education

Barron’s Education Services, Inc., named Albright College to its list of Best Buys in College Education. The book, now in its ninth edition, is currently available for purchase in bookstores and online.

Colleges are selected to appear in Best Buys in College Education based on various criteria including tuition rates, as well as the results of a questionnaire that is completed by students and administration at the institution. The final 247 colleges selected represent the best combination of sound data and student satisfaction.

Gregory E. Eichhorn, Albright College vice president for enrollment management and dean of admission, said making the list is an honor. “It’s gratifying that Barron’s has once again recognized Albright for providing a high quality education at an affordable price.”
