New Gateway to Albright Welcomes the World

A new gateway to Albright College was dedicated in May. Located at the intersection of Rockland and North 13th Streets, the
gateway was made possible through the generosity of trustee emeritus Salvatore M. Cutrona Sr.’73 and Nanette Ferrante Cutrona ’74.

The gateway pays tribute to those who have served on Albright’s Board of Trustees since the College’s founding in 1856. The dedication plaque reads:

Honoring the men and women who have served Albright College on its Board of Trustees since its founding in 1856. By generously sharing their gifts of time, talent and treasure, trustees help prepare our students to provide leadership and service in our global society.

The gateway also represents the diverse and global Albright student body. Thirteen flags represent the United States, Pennsylvania and Albright, as well as 10 home nations of international students currently enrolled at Albright. During the dedication, 10 international students raised their home nation’s flag. The flags will be rotated periodically so that all the home nations of current students will be displayed from time to time.

The gateway was designed by The Ray Group and constructed and landscaped by Spayd’s Landscaping.

Tree Rededicated in Memory of Gene Shirk

Although the rain persuaded them to move indoors, 55 people gathered on May 9 to rededicate a tree in memory of cross-country and track coach Gene Shirk.

The original tree dedicated in Shirk’s honor was moved when Gene L. Shirk Stadium was rebuilt in 2005.

Members of the Shirk family, including Annadora Shirk, Ph.D., Shirk’s widow and beloved professor emerita of English, attended the ceremony. Tom Chaves ’85, president of the Albright Alumni Association, spearheaded the replanting and rededication of the tree.
