Rolling Up Their Sleeves

When Melissa Jaworski ’09 decided to deliver carnations as a personal thank you to the Albright College staff who cook and clean for her everyday, she got an idea.

Because of the overwhelming response she received from her simple act of kindness, Jaworski, along with Danielle Ferri ’10, spearheaded Housekeeping/Facilities Staff Appreciation Days at Albright in April. Students worked side-by-side, both day and night, with staff members to clean residence halls, mop floors, do yard work, paint and much more.

Jaworski said she hopes students will “come to understand their [the staff’s] jobs, to know the individuals personally, and to learn to appreciate and love the campus that we’re all a part of.”

When asking students to sign up she said, “It’s a chance for you, individually, to make a difference in the life of someone who works each day to make a difference in yours.”

This event was sponsored by the student organization, Albright Christian Fellowship.

“Fulfilling the Promise,” Albright Strategic Plan Approved

Albright’s new strategic plan, “Fulfilling the Promise,” was endorsed by the Board of Trustees in May. The charge by President Lex McMillan to the Strategic Planning Committee was to engage in a collaborative and interactive process with diverse Albright stakeholders, and to “Test all things. Hold fast to that which is good” (Thessalonians 5:21), that is, to ensure that the College reaffirm its mission, heritage, interdisciplinary excellence and outstanding accomplishments while planning for the challenges of an ever-changing world.

“There is much that is good in the previous plan, and much that has already been accomplished, so this has been a time to re-vision,” said McMillan. “We deliberately focused on our core strengths to let that guide how we use our resources going forward. I think the new plan is both rooted and visionary.”

The plan has four main goals:

Fostering Academic Excellence: To be a learning community with an unwavering commitment to student success. Strategic initiatives include a general studies review to ensure that our students know the world, understand the world and engage with the world; increased opportunities for experiential learning; enhancement of College physical spaces to nurture learning; and strengthened learning resources.

Strengthening Our Residential Learning
Community:
Building upon our mission and interdisciplinary focus, to further develop our studentcentered campus, enriching programming beyond the classroom for all students, and enhancing intellectual and spiritual discovery and wellness for all students– traditional, adult, and graduate–and their particular needs, including improving campus facilities and services. We will attract and retain an exceptional student body and a diverse community of learners.

Enhancing Community Relations: To be an engaged campus and strengthen relationships with key constituencies to the mutual benefit of both the College and those constituencies. We will focus specifically on strengthening alumni programs and services; embracing Greater Reading, especially in creating initiatives such as internships and projects connecting us with the growing Latino community; and building on our strength in the arts as a resource to the community.

Achieving Financial Stability: Financial stability is the underpinning of Albright’s strategic initiatives. Our objectives include alignment of planning and budgeting; a strategic capital infusion; increasing sources of revenue; improving operational efficiencies; and building on our success in fundraising, especially through Crossing Boundaries: The Campaign for Albright and the Fund for Albright.

The College is developing an operational plan that will articulate how these goals will be achieved and measured. According to McMillan,“Because our commitment is to make our strategic agenda a living process, the Strategic Planning Committee will be a standing committee. The Committee will conduct a periodic review of the strategic agenda and the operational plan and modify, revise and update them as necessary and monitor the key strategic indicators that measure success.”

The Strategic Planning Committee is chaired by Trustee John T. Baily ’65 and Dr. Thomas C. Brogan, professor of political science.
