Albright Receives Prestigious United Way Award

Carolyn Brooks, Ed.D., president of the board of Leadership
Berks, and Toni Eckert, executive director, accept
the Award for Leadership in Learning for a Lifetime from
President McMillan on behalf of the organization.
While Albright College has been a long supporter
of the United Way, this year marks a milestone. The
College was awarded the United Way’s prestigious
Carl E. Levan Award for consistently increasing
participation, both in the percentage of employee
giving, as well as more than doubling the amount of
dollars given from two years ago to the United Way.
The College went from $10,384 from 81 individuals
to $21,372 from 172 individuals.
Karen A. Rightmire ‘69, president of the United
Way of Berks County and Albright trustee, said, “It
is extraordinary for a small institution to double its
contribution to the United Way in two years. We are
grateful for the College’s energy and commitment. It
makes a real impact on the people in Berks County.”
United Way committee member Beth A. Krause,
financial aid counselor, said, “It truly reflects Albright’s
commitment to the Berks County community, and
provides recognition to Albright for the dedication
and community involvement of our employees. Our
partnership with the United Way will continue to
grow as more and more employees become aware
of the benefits that donations to the United Way can
provide to the community and the College itself.”
The Carl E. Levan Award is given annually to a
nonprofit organization that has shown outstanding
dedication to the United Way. The award was named
after Carl E. Levan in recognition of his 35 years of
giving to the American Red Cross. |
Learning for a Lifetime
Award Goes to
Leadership Berks
The third annual President’s Award for Leadership
in Learning for a Lifetime was presented to
Leadership Berks, a nonprofit organization whose
mission is to “provide programs that will broaden
the base of effective future voluntary community
leadership within Berks County.”
Organizations or programs eligible for this
award may be civic, religious, professional,
social-welfare or philanthropic organizations, as
well as businesses, educational institutions and
many others. Programs may provide education in
the areas of physical or mental health, the arts,
community service, fostering leadership, creating
an informed citizenry, teaching social advocacy or
economic/financial/consumer skills, developing
career or vocational skills, and furthering environmental
awareness, to name a few.
Leadership Berks has been training and inspiring
both leadership and volunteerism in Berks
County since 1985. Christian P. Sockel, J.D., senior
director of planned giving and major giving at
Albright, is a 2007 graduate of Leadership Berks’
intensive training program.
As both a Leadership Berks grad and an
Albrightian, he said, “It shows we [Albright]
want to play an important part in this community.
It also shows commitment to Berks County
and charitable work, not just to Albright, but
to the entire community. We will thrive if the
community thrives.”
The President’s Award for Leadership in
Learning for a Lifetime was conceived by the late
Edward Gilbert, Ph.D., professor of psychology,
who was dedicated to strengthening college/community relations.
Previous awards were presented to The Reading
Public Library, Junior Achievement and the
Lazy H. Riding Academy. |
