South African Church Leader Shares Experiences in
Fighting Apartheid
Peter Storey, a South African Methodist preacher,
pastor and church leader, gave a firsthand account of the church’s
role in the anti-apartheid struggle during the fourth annual Ellen
S. Hurwitz Presidential Lecture on Faith, Reason and the Imagination
in May. Having devoted his life to fighting apartheid, Storey told
audience members about the part he played in bringing a democratic
government to South Africa.
Storey is currently a distinguished professor
of Christian Ministry at Duke University. After ordination in the
1960s, he developed innovative down-town ministries in Cape Town
and Johannesburg. While there, he was Nelson Mandela’s prison
chaplain on Robben Island.
He is a former bishop of the Johannesburg/Soweto
area and national leader of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa.
He led a delegation in 1984 that urged the international community
to sanction South Africa until it ended apartheid. He was also appointed
by President Mandela to help select the nation’s Truth and
Reconciliation Commission.
The Ellen S. Hurwitz Presidential Lecture Series
on Faith, Reason and the Imagination was established in honor of
Albright’s twelfth president. The series, which focuses on
both faith and spirit, invites world-class leaders to Albright to
foster conversations across the many faith traditions at Albright,
connecting learning, creativity and the cosmic picture.
