Five Faculty Recognized
for Distinguished Teaching
For excellence in teaching and achievements in
scholarly and creative activity, Albright College presented five
faculty members with awards during Albright’s 2003 Commencement
ceremony on May 18.
Ann
V. Myers, Ph.D. was awarded the Lindback Distinguished
Teaching Award. The award, funded by the Lindback Foundation, is
given to a faculty member who exemplifies excellence and innovation
in teaching. Myers, professor of French, engrosses her students
in the French culture through activities such as viewing French
videos, reading French novels and keeping up with French newspapers
online. Myers also serves as chair of the faculty. She received
her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
The
Henry P. and M. Paige Laughlin Distinguished Teaching Award honors
the most creative and constructive members of the Albright faculty.
The award was presented to Julia F. Heberle, Ph.D.
Heberle, assistant professor of psychology, is committed to research
as a part of the undergraduate experience and starts many students
down the path of research for college honors or departmental distinction.
She also serves as chair of the Honors subcommittee. Heberle received
her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
The
Class of 1949/Annadora Vesper Shirk Scholarly and Creative Accomplishment
Award was presented to John S. Incledon, Ph.D.
Incledon, professor of Spanish, has published numerous translations
of Latin American literature, as well as articles in which he applies
modern literary theory and psychoanalytical technique to Latin American
literature. He received his Ph.D. from the State University of New
York at Binghamton. The award is named in honor of Albright Professor
Emerita Annadora Vesper Shirk.
Edward R. Gilbert, Ed.D. and
Guillaume de Syon, Ph.D. were both presented with
the United Methodist Division of Higher Education Award. The award
recognizes a faculty member(s) who not only demonstrates excellence
in teaching but also is committed to value-centered education and
service to the community beyond the campus.
Gilbert,
professor of psychology, is the longest-serving active faculty member
at Albright College, teaching at Albright since 1958. He is the
founder of the Blue Spruce Foundation, which aids Berks County college
students with temporary, unexpected educational expenses that threaten
their ability to continue their education. He received his Ed.D.
from Temple University.
Like
Gilbert, de Syon, associate professor of history, demonstrates a
deep commitment to value-centered education. He is known on the
Albright campus for embodying civility and concern for his students,
as well as his colleagues. He received his Ph.D. from Boston University.
