Women’s Swim Team Wins Fourth Consecutive MAC Championship

Winning their fourth consecutive MAC Championship, the women’s swim team
won five of the six events contested on the third day of competition to end with 753
points for the meet, 151 clear of second-place Misericordia.

It was also the last appearance at a MAC Championship meet for swimmer Rachel
Cantwell ’08, who completed the most dominating run in conference history. Cantwell
won the 200 breaststroke, setting a new school record and making the NCAA “B”
cut in the process, to collect her third individual title in the meet. She has never been
beaten in the MAC Championship meet, winning 12 individual championships in 12
tries as well as 16 relay wins in 16 tries. Cantwell was named the David Eavenson Most
Outstanding Swimmer at the championship meet for the fourth straight year.

Albright head coach John Stuhltrager was named the MAC Women’s Coach of the
Year, while members of the men’s swim team, Eric Kramer ’11 and Chris Sheerer ’11,
took home the David B. Eavenson Award and the Rookie of the Year Award, respectively.
The men’s team placed second at the MACs.

Janice Luck and Rick Ferry Named Co-Directors of Athletics

Head women’s basketball coach Janice (Johnson) Luck’96 and head men’s basketball coach Rick Ferry have been named co-directors of athletics. The appointment will begin on June 1, 2008, following the retirement of current director of athletics Steve George, Ed.D. ’68.

Luck is in her sixth season as the head coach of the Lady Lions, and was recently named Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Division III Coach of the Year. She has led Albright to unprecedented new heights (see story on page 6). Albright has compiled a combined record of 45-24 under Luck since the start of the 2005-06 season, and last winter returned to post-season play for the first time in 10 years.

Luck has also been an assistant director of athletics and senior women’s administrator since 2004, serving as recruiting coordinator for the Athletic Department and adviser to the Student Athletic Advisory Council.

Ferry was hired as the College’s 12th men’s basketball coach in April 2001.

Under his leadership, the men’s program has earned a Commonwealth Conference championship and trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2005. The Lions won 21 games under Ferry that winter, the second-highest total in school history. Ferry has compiled a career record of 86-83 in his six-plus seasons on the Albright bench, but is 78-
43 since the 2003-04 season.

He has served as an assistant director of athletics since 2002, overseeing the club sports programs and the department budgets.

George has been director of athletics since 2003. He returned to Albright in 1999 after a career in public education to coach the Albright softball team. During his three years as head coach, George compiled a record of 68-37, taking the team to school record victory totals and the first post-season games in the history of the program. He left the softball team to become director of housing in 2002, and was named director of athletics in 2003.
