When William Lone Star Dietz died on July 20, 1964, in St. Joseph
Hospital, Reading, he was holding a copy of this poem by his football
coach and mentor, Glenn S. “Pop” Warner.
Keep A-goin’
By Glenn S. “Pop” Warner
Do your darndest when you play,
Keep a-goin’.
To take it easy doesn’t pay,
Keep a-goin’.
When the game is pretty tough,
Don’t you ever holler “nuff,”
Show the world you have the
stuff.
Keep a-goin’.
If you strike a better bunch,
Keep a-goin’.
You only need a harder punch,
Keep a-goin’.
‘Tain’t no use to stand and whine
When they’re coming through
your line.
Hitch your trousers up and climb,
Keep a-goin’.
If the other team’s on top,
Keep a-goin’.
That’s just the time you must not stop,
Keep a-goin’.
‘S’pose they stop ‘most every play:
One good long run may
win the day.
To get discouraged doesn’t pay,
Keep a-goin’.
When it seems the game is lost,
Keep a-goin’.
Do not stop at any cost –
Keep a-goin’.
Don’t ever think that you can’t win it,
A fightin’ team
is always in it.
So don’t let up a single minute,
Keep a-goin’!
