Jim
Thorpe, left, often called the “Worlds Greatest Athlete” for
his Olympic decathlon and pentathlon victories, visited William “Lone
Star” Dietz, right, and the Lions at Albright in 1941. Pictured
in the center is the late John Killiany ‘46, varsity quarterback.
Dietz and Thorpe played football together on the famous Carlisle
Indian Industrial School team, and remained friends all their lives.
The team’s 11-1-0 record in 1911 included victories over football
giants Harvard and University of Pennsylvania. (Courtesy of Albright

Dietz’s
charisma and his legendary love of fashion. At this time, Dietz was

State College football team and the cast of the movie, “Tom
Brown at Harvard.” Dietz had arranged for the players to appear
as extras in the football movie, in which he also played a small
role. This was one of several Hollywood movies in which Lone Star
appeared. (Courtesy
