Trustee
Emeritus John F. Horrigan Awarded Robert P. Casey Medal for Commitment
to Independent Higher Education
Albright trustee emeritus John F. Horrigan
Jr., retired chairman and chief executive officer of Horrigan American
Inc., was the 2004 recipient of the Robert P. Casey Medal for Commitment
to Independent Higher Education. The award, which is reserved for
individuals or organizations that have shown an extraordinary commitment
to the value of independent higher education, was presented by the
Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Pennsylvania
(AICUP) at their annual meeting in March.
In his acceptance speech, Horrigan said of
the honor: “I never
considered the possibility of receiving any special recognition resulting
from my association with Albright College when I was doing no more
than I strongly believe in, that is, the value of a private school
education, giving back to my hometown, and enjoying the vitality
and commitment of the Albright College community which fosters so
beautifully the growth and maturation of young people.”
Previous recipients of the Robert P. Casey
Medal include Siegfried Weis & Robert Weis, owners of Weis Markets; Drs. John M. & Josephine
Templeton, The Templeton Foundation; Thomas W. Golonski, chair,
president and chief executive officer, National City Bank of PA;
and the UPS
Foundation.
Horrigan served on the Board of Trustees from
1988 until 2003 and was board chair from 1996 to 2000. |

Albright Stories
A series of "Albright Stories" is planned as part of the
150th. Do you know a fascinating story about a person, place or event,
from Albright or one of our parent institutions from 1856 on? For
example, we're on the trail of the Dorman panther, and we recently
acquired the diploma and a story about James Galt Overholser who
graduated from Schuylkill Academy in 1890 and went on to found a
town in North Dakota.
Please write to Barbara Marshall, College Relations or email bmarshall@alb.edu with a capsule of the story. Tell us if you have (or know where to
find) supporting documents or artifacts, or if you can identify individuals
who were at the place, involved in the event or have first-hand knowledge
of the person.
If you'd like to be involved in one of the Sesquicentennial committees,
please contact Pamela Panarella at 610-921-7667 or email ppanarella@alb.edu. |
Albright
Aquatic Program Named One of Top 60
in Nation
The United States Water Fitness Association has named Albright College’s
Aquatic Program as one of the top 60 aquatic programs in the United
States. Albright’s aquatic personal trainer program was ranked
in the top 30, and aquatic director JoAnn Stockholm also received
honors as one of the top 60 aquatic directors in the country.
“
It’s an honor to be named one of the top in the nation, but
the biggest thing to remember is that I don’t do it alone.
We’re very blessed with a wonderful aquatics staff,” Stockholm
said. “I’d like to especially acknowledge Jenis Frederick,
Eileen Zatratz, John Stuhltrager and Tom Burkman. If you don’t
have people like them working with you, you couldn’t get it
done.”
The National Aquatic Awards program
began in 1997. Over the years, more than 700 different aquatic facilities
have entered.
