Albright Gets a Facelift

Sylvan Pond & Gardens, Senior Walkway Legacy and Revitalized Library Plaza Beautify Campus

This year students have many more choices for places to study and hang out on campus. A renovated Sylvan Pond with new gardens and a revitalized library plaza have completely transformed the campus.

Thanks to a generous gift from alumna Rosemarie Machmer ’49, students now relax around a completely renovated Sylvan Pond with new gardens. Machmer made her gift in memory of her husband, the late Richard Machmer, and her son, the late Chris Machmer ’74.

The renovation of this historic section of campus included a total transformation of the space with new trees, shrubs and flowers. The pond has a new water feature making it more picturesque, as well as safer for the inevitable tradition of “ponding,” throwing students in the pond on their birthdays.

A crowd of more than 100 Albright supporters and friends of the Machmer family gathered for the formal dedication of the new space on August 12.

The Library Plaza renovation includes new pavers,
landscaping and shade trees, as well as handsome tables and comfortable seating for students and faculty.

The Sylvan Pond area is the first section of campus to benefit from new walkways, funded by recent graduates of the College. The class of 2006 started the Senior Walkway Legacy project as its senior gift, and the classes of 2007 and 2008 are continuing this new tradition of giving back to their alma mater and leaving their mark on Albright. The names of those students who give $100 or more are inscribed on pavers in the walkway.

Sylvan’s second phase of renovations, which must be coordinated with the construction of the new Albright College Science Center, will include adding a small amphitheatre or outdoor classroom space and new handicap access to Science Hall.

The plaza in front of the F. Wilbur Gingrich Library was also renovated. The renovation includes new pavers, landscaping and shade trees, as well as handsome and comfortable tables and chairs that provide much needed outdoor seating for students and faculty. The tables and chairs were made possible with generous gifts from the sisters of Phi Delta Sigma. The time capsule, which was filled and sealed during Albright’s Sesquicentennial celebration in 2006, is buried there with a paver to mark its location.

The library plaza was officially dedicated during Homecoming-Family Weekend in October.
