Albright Security Officer
Sworn in as Police Officer |
This
summer, Corporal Michael Mulholland of Albright’s Safety & Security
Department was sworn in as a police officer in Berks County. Mulholland
is the first security officer to become a police officer in the history
of Albright. Having attended the Reading Police Academy and successfully
completing Act 120 certification, Mulholland has the authority to
detain and arrest those entering the Albright campus intent on engaging
in criminal activities.
According to Bob Gerken, director of safety and
security, Mulholland is the first of several who will become police
officers over the next few years. “Having one member of the
Safety & Security Department
as a sworn police officer opens up grant opportunities that were
not available in the past,” Gerken said. “The new position
is also consistent with our goal to continue to improve the professionalism
of the department.”
The advantages of this initiative are to increase
the level of protection and security to all those who are part of
the Albright community as well as our guests. It also provides more
direct contact with police departments whose jurisdiction covers
the college campus. “We
will have access to county and city radio communications, which will
allow us to be more proactive in any emergency situation that could
affect the campus,” Gerken said.
Both Muhlenberg Township Police and the Reading
Police Department will continue to assist the Safety & Security
Department when necessary, Gerken added. “Both chiefs and the
district attorney have been very supportive of this endeavor.” |

| A Dramatic
Challenge to Alumni and Friends |
The
many friends and former students of Professor Lynn Morrow, who died
last spring, hope to rename the Wachovia Theatre Lobby in her memory
as the Lynn Morrow Memorial Theatre Lobby. Funds are still needed
for that project, and an anonymous donor has challenged fellow Albright
alumni, friends and family to raise the remaining amount.
The donor will match each gift received toward
this project dollar for dollar, up to $25,000. The donor's $25,000
gift will be used to establish an endowed scholarship for an Albright
student with a concentration or co-concentration in theatre.
Donations can be made by visiting the Albright
website www.albright.edu/alumni/-
donationform.html and selecting
the Lynn Morrow Memorial Theatre Lobby Project. Checks payable to
Albright College may be sent to Kelly Ferry, Director of Reunion
Giving, Albright College, 13th & Bern Streets,
P.O. Box 15234, Reading, PA 19612-5234.
For more information or questions concerning this
challenge, contact Kelly Ferry at 610-921-7508 or kferry@alb.edu. |

Men’s
Basketball Team Travels to Ireland and
England, Compiles 3-1 Record |
It
was educational. It was a team-building experience. And they compiled
a 3-1 record on the court.
In August, the men’s basketball team traveled to Ireland
and England for 10 days. Head coach Rick Ferry said, “Not only
was the trip a good educational and cultural experience, it also
gave us the opportunity to come together as a team and play some
good basketball against a couple of professional teams.”
The team began their tour with an 86-64 win over the Limerick Basketball
Club in Limerick, Ireland. They went on to win games against the
Hackey White Heat, the premier developmental team in England, and
the Puma All Stars. Their only loss was against Vincent’s,
a member of the Irish Basketball Superleague in Dublin.
“As a coach I was very happy with the basketball that was played,” said
Ferry. Ben Gallagher ’05, one of two seniors on the team, agreed. “It
was nice to see how we sized up to international competition. I was
pretty happy with our play over there.”
But winning games wasn’t the only memorable
experience. “It
was a great team-building experience,” said Elu Lawrence ’05.
We were like a family over there…when we played, when we
toured the sites…we did everything together. I’ll
always look back on it as a good experience, both on and off the
court.” |
