Kit Rank: Paintings on View at the Freedman Gallery
Beginning October 21

Reading, Pa.- The Freedman Gallery at Albright College will present the exhibit Kit Rank: Paintings,  October 21 – December 10, 2010.  An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 21, from 5-7 p.m.

Rank brings her unique, visual perception of Chinese, Mexican, Native American, Italian and Japanese cultures to the Freedman Gallery.  Her subjects overtly combine her interest in older cultures with satirical observations of contemporary life.

Rank shows how difficult it is for the old to embrace and accept modern life.  Conversely, with the inclusion of an occasional self-portrait, she shows how the modern era can sometimes yearn for the traditions of the past.

Her meticulous method of working stems from an early influence of Japanese woodcuts.  This allows her to eliminate the formal restraints of perspective by creating illusions of deep space through large fields of fragmented color and design.  The resulting impression is one of complete freshness and clarity, showing a highly sophisticated level of abstraction.

Rank was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and studied at the Art Institute of Colorado, Denver, and the Art Students League in New York.

This exhibition is part of Albright’s year-long celebration of Women in the Arts. Albright’s Center for the Arts has chosen to focus this season – 90 years after women in America received full enfranchisement – on women and the arts to explore gender as both a potential limitation and source of inspiration in theatre, music, fashion and visual arts.
