Talking about Hate…Acting out of Hope:
Lecture to be Presented by Local Academic and Activist Jennifer Schlegel
Reading, Pa.- Berks County academic and activist Jennifer Schlegel, Ph.D., will present a lecture, “Talking about Hate…Acting out of Hope” on Monday, October 20, 2008, at
7 p.m. at Albright College. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Kachel Chapel, Teel Hall.
Schlegel’s professional and vocational interests are in the field of hate studies. As an academic, Schlegel teaches an innovative undergraduate course on hate in cross-cultural perspective and presents her material at professional conferences. She is currently working on a project titled, “Disquieting Silence: Censorship as a Response to Hate.”
As an activist, Schlegel has led the Boyertown Area Unity Coalition and the Reading-Berks Conflict Resolution Task Force. She has worked in collaboration with representatives from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and community relations divisions as well as nonprofit groups to provide education, training and outreach services.
Schlegel earned her doctorate in anthropology from UCLA. She is an assistant professor of anthropology and sociology at Millersville University.
