Reading , Pa.- Three hundred and two traditional graduates and 12 master’s degree graduates will receive diplomas at Albright College’s 150th Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. Diplomas will be presented by Albright President Lex O. McMillan III, Ph.D. The ceremony will be held outdoors in Gene Shirk Stadium, located on 13th Street.
Former banking executive P. Sue Perrotty will speak to the graduating seniors. Perrotty graduated from Albright in 1975. She is a retired trustee of the Albright Board of Trustees, and was co-chair of the College’s highly successful $43 million comprehensive capital campaign. She also will be presented with an honorary doctoral degree.
The Baccalaureate ceremony, held at 10 a.m. in the stadium, will feature The Reverend Frederick Douglas Jr., Ph.D., an elder with the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. Douglas will also receive an honorary doctoral degree.
One additional doctoral degree will be presented to Jay R. Rosan, D.O., a family physician and serial entrepreneur.
Commencement speaker P. Sue Perrotty of Reading, Pa., ischairman of the board of KnowledgeFlow, Inc., an early stage technology and market development company focused on information delivery via the internet. Previously, she served as chief of staff to the First Lady of Pennsylvania Judge Marjorie Rendell from 2003 to 2007, and continues to serve as an adviser to the Governor and First Lady on statewide programs.
In 2002, Perrotty retired from banking after a 27 year career in the industry. She held the position of executive vice president and head of global operations for First Union Corp. as a member of the Office of the Chairman in Charlotte, N.C., retiring after serving on the merger integration team overseeing the Wachovia Bank merger.
She was named to Pennsylvania’s 50 Best Women in Business by the Ridge administration.
Actively involved in the community, Perrotty serves on several boards including Our City Reading, Philadelphia Hospitality, Berks County Community Foundation and the Church Capital Value Trust mutual fund. She is also chair of the Olivet Boys and Girls Club Advisory Board and served on the Initiative for a Competitive Greater Reading project team.
Perrotty graduated from Albright College with bachelor’s degree in economics.
Albright’s Baccalaureate speaker, The Reverend Frederick Douglas Jr., Ph.D., of West Chester, Pa., serves Devereux Memorial United Methodist Church in Philadelphia, has pastored four other local congregations, and served as chaplain at Methodist Home for Children.
Douglas has taught Christian education/spiritual formation for EPC’s first Local Preachers School, and has facilitated workshops at yearly gatherings in Nashville, Tenn., for chaplains certified by General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. He recently published a book, Somebody’s Knock-in At Your Door, which is a personal reflection on the call to ministry, vocation and service.
Before answering the call to ordained ministry, Douglas was a tenured professor at the College of New Jersey. His teaching assignment included two departments within the Undergraduate and Graduate School of Education (1971-1992). His private physical therapy practice specialized in sports medicine, rehabilitation for orthopedic and neurological disabilities (1973-1989).
Academic credentials include: a bachelor’s degree from Saint Augustine’s College, Raleigh, N.C.; University of Pennsylvania, School of Allied Medical Professions, Division of Physical Therapy, Post-Graduate Program; a master of education from West Chester University; a doctorate from The Ohio State University; and a master of divinity from Drew University, School of Theology.
Honorary degree recipient Jay R. Rosan, D.O., of Gwynedd Valley, Pa., was the managing partner in a model family practice that grew from one to eight physicians. The practice is one of the most successful in the Delaware Valley because of its strong values, respect for patients and holistic approach to medicine.
In 1977, Rosan was one of the first medical directors at HMO of Pennsylvania which grew to become U.S. Healthcare. He held many leadership positions and developed the industry’s first and most innovative physician compensation system. He also developed one of the first and largest breast and colorectal cancer screening programs in the United States.
In 1994, he realized that the interactive aspects of the Internet could provide extensive value in improving medical care by allowing consumers to take responsibility for their health. He co-founded InteliHealth, one of the first online consumer health web sites created by U.S. Healthcare and the Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
Later, he became executive vice president for DoctorQuality. A startup company, its mission was to improve the quality of medical care at major employers for their employees by providing web-based solutions that rate hospitals and physicians on medical quality, and in hospitals by providing risk prevention database systems. He continues to serve in that role for Take Care Healthy Systems, a division of Walgreens which acquired CHD Meridian one year ago.
In 2005, he served as a consultant to CHD Meridian Healthcare, a provider of onsite medical care for work places, and in 2006, joined the company as senior vice president of health innovation.
Rosan graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and received a bachelor of science degree in biology/pre-dentistry from Albright College.
Commencement exercises for Albright’s Accelerated Degree Completion Program will take place on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. in Memorial Chapel.
