Reading, Pa. – Albright College’s student-run radio station, WXAC 91.3 FM, has won the Silver Microphone Award for Outstanding Broadcasting Excellence from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).

“I am extremely excited and proud,” said Albright junior Trent Gray, the station’s music director. “The staff and students at WXAC put in such hard work and improve the station every day and it’s amazing to receive recognition for it.”

Founded in 1940, IBS is a nonprofit education corporation serving affiliated high school, college and community radio stations and streaming webcasters. WXAC received the Bronze Microphone Award for Outstanding Broadcasting Excellence from IBS last year.

“I am thrilled that our hard work has been recognized by our peers. But for me the greater thrill is walking into a store in Reading and hearing WXAC playing on their radio,” said Mindy Cohen, station manager and faculty adviser. “WXAC is a wonderful mixture of student volunteers and interns, and volunteers from the community.”

The 50-year-old station helps train students in broadcasting operations and fosters communication and life skills. WXAC also presents an alternative to commercial radio by acting as a forum for music, poetry and the arts. The station disseminates information relevant to and important for the Albright community and beyond, and provides Reading’s Latino community with a non-biased, non-commercial Spanish-language platform.

Last year, WXAC relocated from its studios in the basement of the Albright Library/Administration building to the newly named Berks Community Media Center at 13th and Richmond streets, sharing space with Berks Community Television (BCTV).

“Our new space, particularly the studios, has really awakened the love and dedication each and every one of us feels for the station and it has had great results,” said Cohen.
