Two New Trustees Appointed to Albright College Board Reading , Pa.- Joan Develin Coley, Ph.D., of Westminster, Md., and Douglas N. Yocom of Douglassville, Pa., were recently appointed to the Albright College Board of Trustees. Both will serve three-year terms. Joan Develin Coley, Ph.D., is president of McDaniel College, formerly known as Western Maryland College, and has served as an educator and administrator at the private, liberal arts college since 1973. She is a 1966 Albright graduate, and was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree by Albright College in 2006. The eighth president of McDaniel College, Coley is the first to have advanced through the faculty ranks. She joined the faculty as director of the graduate reading program and went on to serve as dean of graduate affairs and chair of the department of education. She served as provost for six years and was appointed interim president in 2000. A crusader to help students with serious reading disabilities, Coley led a four-week intensive summer reading clinic for 26 years for middle school and elementary school students, and served as a National Educational Trainer for the federally-funded “Right-to-Read” project, where she has led workshops for teachers in 13 states. Coley is widely published as the author of nearly 100 papers and has presented nationally at professional meetings, staff development sessions and conferences. She has been honored with numerous awards for both her professional and civic activities. In 2010, Coley was the recipient of the American Red Cross of Central Maryland’s Distinguished Women’s Awards, and in 2007, she received the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Distinguished Women’s Award. She was also selected as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record for 2000, 2002 and 2004. She has served on the executive committee and as chair of the Centennial Conference, and has participated in and led the Middle States Commission on Higher Education reaccreditation process for Nazareth College and Allegheny College. Coley earned a bachelor of arts in English from Albright College and both a master’s and doctorate in education from the University of Maryland. At McDaniel College’s Commencement ceremony on May 22, 2010, she was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree. Douglas N. Yocom is president and chief executive officer of Precision Medical Products, Inc., a specialized medical device manufacturing company located in Denver, Pa. Yocom co-founded the company in 1997. He was formerly controller of Arrow Precision Products, Inc., a 1984 spin-off company of Arrow International, Inc. Prior to joining Arrow Precision Products, he was accounting manager for Arrow International, Inc., and before that he was a staff accountant for Rockwell International, Inc. In 2003, he was the recipient of the Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Yocom serves the Berks County community in multiple ways. He serves on the United Way Board of Directors, is a member of the Executive Committee and is chairman elect of the board. Yocom is also a member of the audit and finance committee and co-chair of the Tocqueville Society of United Way of Berks County. In 2007, he served as co-chair of the United Way Capital Campaign. Yocom is the president of the board, Hawk Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America, an Eagle Scout, a Distinguished Eagle Scout, and a Brotherhood member of The Order of the Arrow and a Silver Beaver. He is also a member of the board of The Children’s Home of Reading and serves on the Community Leaders Advisory Council of Albright College. Yocom earned a bachelor of science degree in business from Bloomsburg University. Founded in 1856, Albright College is a nationally ranked, private college with a rigorous liberal arts curriculum with an interdisciplinary focus. The College’s hallmarks are connecting fields of learning, collaborative teaching and learning, and a flexible curriculum that allows students to create an individualized education. Two-thirds of students graduate with dual/individualized majors in more than 200 different combinations.
