Political Commentator to Address Relationship between News and Citizenship
Reading, Pa. – Political commentator Danilo Yanich, Ph.D., will present a lecture, Wag the Dog: Citizens, News and the Media, on Monday, February 6, 2012, at 6 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Albright’s Campus Center, South Lounge. Yanich will also meet with students and faculty in classes and small groups during the day. In his public lecture, he will discuss the relationship between news and citizenship and show examples of how news is presented increasingly in a way that makes the practice of citizenship difficult to accomplish. He will also offer approaches for critical news consumption. Yanich, associate professor and director of master’s and doctoral programs in urban affairs and public policy at the University of Delaware, is a knowledgeable political commentator who is regularly called upon by the media to offer analysis and comment on national and international affairs. Currently engaged in cutting-edge policy research on media, citizenship and public policy, he contributed a vital chapter to the newly published volume Communications Research in Action: Scholar-Activist Collaborations for a Democratic Public Sphere, which has received critical acclaim for filling a void in communication and information policy. He has also published in and serves as a reviewer for a variety of academic journals. The Campus Center is located on the Albright College campus at 13th & Bern Streets in Reading, Pa.
