The Freedman Gallery Presents Romare Bearden Family

Reading, Pa. – Albright College’s Freedman
Gallery presents Romare Bearden Family, on view in the project space, now through
exhibition includes a selection of Bearden series prints from the gallery’s
permanent collection, including several examples of Family (1975), showcasing how the artist experimented with color
through aquatint and hand coloring.
(1911-1988), an African-American artist and writer, once said, “I work out of a
response and need to redefine the image of man in the terms of the Negro
experience I know best.” While he worked in several media, Bearden is primarily
known for his collage work during the 1960s. This exhibition offers viewers the
opportunity to experience Bearden’s work in prints, as it explores issues of Black
identity during a time of shifting American culture.
