Reading, Pa. – Albright College’s Freedman Gallery presents Romare Bearden Family, on view in the project space, now through April 27.

The exhibition includes a selection of Bearden series prints from the gallery’s permanent collection, including several examples of Family (1975), showcasing how the artist experimented with color through aquatint and hand coloring.

Bearden (1911-1988), an African-American artist and writer, once said, “I work out of a response and need to redefine the image of man in the terms of the Negro experience I know best.” While he worked in several media, Bearden is primarily known for his collage work during the 1960s. This exhibition offers viewers the opportunity to experience Bearden’s work in prints, as it explores issues of Black identity during a time of shifting American culture.

For more information about the exhibition, visit www.albright.edu/freedman.

The Freedman Gallery is located in the Center for the Arts at Albright College on 13th and Bern streets, Reading. For more information or disabled assistance, call 610-921-7715.
