Mission Statement
The Special Collections Department of the Gingrich Library, Albright College exists to arrange, describe, preserve, and make available materials of enduring historic value, both as intellectual items and as historical artifacts pertaining to Albright College and the local area, as well as to support the research needs of students, faculty and other researchers.
It is the responsibility of Special Collections to protect materials in its care from damage due to misuse of the collections, damage from climatic conditions, pests, or other means of destruction, and damage from problems inherent in physical documents themselves, to ensure their longevity for the use of researchers as long as possible.
Objectives
- To collect materials in the following primary areas: the history of the college, United Methodist Church, Reading and Berks County, Pennsylvania Dutch, and to consider future expansion into other areas when suitable conditions occur.
- To encourage the donation of collections, works, and materials which enhance the collections.
- To encourage the study and use of the department's collections through exhibitions, loans, photocopies, course work, and instruction.
- To encourage and establish endowment funds with which to support as much of the collection's budgetary needs as possible.
Priorities
Special Collections, Gingrich Library, Albright College concentrates on acquiring the following:
- Materials and memorabilia related to Albright College and its predecessor colleges and seminaries.
- Books and journal articles by alumni and faculty and also students' honors and graduate theses.
- The United Methodist Church, especially the College's Evangelical Association roots.
- Reading and Berks County.
- Pennsylvania Dutch language and culture
- Limited editions of books.
