Student Workers


Policy Statement

Each student employee is an important and valuable asset to the successful operation of the Gingrich Library. We expect that the working experience will be enjoyable and that each student will put forth their best effort.

Objectives

  • To provide personnel for college operations.
  • To provide financial aid income to meet educational expenses related to college via part-time employment opportunities for our students.
  • To foster good work habits and attitude, such as dependability, efficiency and thoroughness.
  • To provide valuable experiences and training for future employment.

Hiring Priorities

  • The Library makes every effort to hire students who have work study funds. But study work study and self-help funds are not guaranteed. If the student qualifies and if student assistance funds are available, and the student's talents and availability match the library's needs, every effort will be match the student to a position.
  • Once the student has fulfilled his/her Human Resources paperwork, preference may be given to students who have a current work study award.
  • The Library department with the position vacancy has the right to determine whom they will employ from the candidates pool.
  • All students workers are hired to supplement regular employee staffing, not to replace it.

    Student Work Policies

    • All students are expected to follow the guidelines in the Library Student Contract and the Albright College Confidentiality Agreement.
    • All students are expected to follow the rules and regulations of their departments and perform the duties stated on their job descriptions.
    • Students will not be excused from class in order to work during a specially scheduled class time -- students should obtain replacements if they work in circulation or make up the time if they work in other departments.
    • Students may not work directly for a supervisor who is a member of his/her immediate family.
    • Student wage rates are dependent upon college pay rates and current job position and job performance..
    • All students will be evaluated at least annually and subsequent hiring or promotion is dependent upon a good evaluation.
    • Students are compensated for hours actually worked or trained.
    • Student employees may work not more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session. Students who work during Interim or Summer may work up to 40 hours per week if they are not enrolled in that semester but are enrolled for the next full spring or fall semester.
    • Students are not paid for time missed for vacation, leaves, sickness, etc., although these may be considered excused absences if supervisor approval is received.
    • Student workers are protected under the State of Pennsylvania's Workman's Compensation Act for injuries or illnesses arising out of and in the course of their employment.
    • Students are expected to report promptly for assigned work hours. In the case of an emergency or illness, students must contact their supervisor as early as possible, but before the shift begins. Circulation Managers should refer to their Contract for more details on covering a missed shift.
    • Students should give at least two weeks notice before leaving any library position.
    • Whenever disputes arise between student workers and their supervisors, every effort will be made to resolve the issue.
    • Students who have worked with their supervisor or department head to resolve problems, have the option of appealing any supervisor decision to the Library Director. They will be asked to present a written explanation of the issue and their concerns before any meeting is set.
