Special Collections Department Policy


Mission Philosophy

The Special Collections Department of the Gingrich Library, Albright College exists to arrange, describe, preserve, and make available materials of enduring historic value, both as intellectual items and as historical artifacts pertaining to Albright College and the local area, to support the research needs of students, faculty and other researchers.

It is the responsibility of Special Collections to protect materials in its care from damage due to misuse of the collections, damage from climatic conditions, pests, or other means of destruction, and from problems inherent in physical documents themselves to ensure their longevity for the use of researchers as long as possible.

Objectives

  1. To collect materials in the following primary areas: the history of the college, United Methodist Church, Reading and Berks County, Pennsylvania Dutch, but consider future expansion into other areas when suitable conditions occur. Duplicating and/or distributing information in violation of applicable copyright laws is not permitted.
  2. To encourage the donation of collections, works, and materials which enhance the collections.
  3. To encourage the study and use of the department's collections through exhibitions, loans, photocopies, course work, and instruction.
  4. To encourage and establish endowment funds with which to support as much of the collection's budgetary needs as possible.

Acquisitions Priorities

  1. Materials and memorabilia related to Albright College and its predecessor colleges and seminaries.
  2. Books and journal articles by alumni and faculty and students' honors and graduate theses.
  3. Materials on the United Methodist Church, especially the College's Evangelical Association roots.
  4. Materials on Reading and Berks County history.
  5. Materials on Pennsylvania Dutch language and culture
  6. Limited editions of books.

Service Priorities

  1. The first priority is serving students faculty and staff with their research needs.
  2. The second priority is helping the public seeking information on topics in special collections.
