Instructional Guidelines

The Instruction Department tries to be as flexible as possible when scheduling a library visit for classes. However, since instruction is viewed in a holistic manner by the librarians, instructional sessions require planning and coordination for the experience to be enriching for the students. Faculty and instructors should respect the following guidelines:

  • Information literacy sessions must be requested through the departmental liaison or the Instruction Coordinator, Robert LeBlanc (x7210 or rleblanc@alb.edu) and can be requested by full-time and adjunct faculty.
  • Faculty members are requested to schedule sessions at least 2 weeks in advance of the time needed, as librarians design each session to suit the unique needs of the course. It is recommended that faculty schedule as early as possible to reserve the time slot that best fits the students' needs, even if the class won't be coming to the library until later in the semester.
  • It is required that faculty members connect the instruction session to a specific course assignment and to time the instruction not too far in advance of the due date. Instruction in a vacuum is ineffective but instruction tied to subject knowledge is effective and improves the information literacy of the students.
  • Faculty members, or their designated proxies, must attend the entire session with the students. Interaction between faculty members, librarians, and students enriches the learning process and emphasizes the importance of the library and information literacy to the students. In addition, students are often more attentive and engaged when the faculty member is present and the faculty can reinforce the library instruction throughout the semester.
  • If planning to bring your class to the library on your own, notify the Library Instruction Coordinator at least a few days before the library visit so that appropriate accommodations can be made. If the Library Media Classroom is unavailable, computers in the reference area may be reserved for your class. During busy times, at least 1/2 of the computers in the reference area must be available for library users. If it's a large group (20+), consider bringing students in two groups.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Rob LeBlanc Instruction Coordinator at rleblanc@alb.edu or 610-921-7212.
