Finding What We Don't Own - Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

While completing an assignment or researching a topic, you may find references to relevant items that the Gingrich Library does not own. Verify ownership by checking the online catalog (for books and media) and the alphabetical listing of both the library's print and electronic journal holdings. This list contains links to the databases where specific titles are available.

Making a request
Once you verify that you cannot obtain the item, you may request your information from interlibrary loan (ILL) via our ILLiad service.. You may submit interlibrary loan requests via:

Delivering the Goods
The Reference and Interlibrary loan staff members use the ILLiad program to acknowledges the receipt of all electronic and fax requests and notifies you when the item is available. Interlibrary loans of photocopied materials or books will be held for pickup behind the circulation desk of the Gingrich Library. Please bring your photo ID card with you. Journal loans will be offered to you electronically. You will be contacted by the ILL office with instructions telling you how to obtain these files (you will need the free Adobe Acrobat reader program loaded on your computer to view them). Special arrangements to mail items to you may be approved by the Supervisor of the Interlibrary Loan Department for those few times of the academic year when the library is on an abbreviated schedule, e.g., parts of August if you can not come to the library when it is open.

Returning the Goods
Files of journal articles and book chapters provided to students as Interlibrary Loans become the property of the student. All books must be returned to the Library by the due date written on the attached slip on the book. Please do not remove any slips added to the book before you return it. Items must  be returned at the Library Circulation Desk (or book drop outside the main entrance if the library is closed) or by mail.

Important Points to consider before requesting an ILL:
  • ILLs normally take about 4 days to 2 weeks to obtain, despite our best efforts to get them as fast as possible therefore you need to start your research early and discuss any problems or special needs with the reference staff at 610-921-7211 or libraryref@alb.edu.
  • Overdue fines for interlibrary loan books and audiovisual materials match those for Albright owned materials.
  • Lost materials are charged at the price set by the loaning library.

Please allow adequate time for this service. The bottom line is -- start your research early and discuss any problems or special needs with the reference staff at 610-921-7211 or libraryref@alb.edu.
