With the generous help of the Christian A. Johnson Foundation, Albright was able to begin its Latin American Studies program in 1999. Dr. James Huck, Jr., came to Albright as the first Director. He began to develop the curriculum, generate a great amount of student interest, and develop important outreach programs to the community. Albright has shown a commitment to the Latin American Studies program by supporting this curriculum and continuing the funding for the position of Director of Latin American Studies, now held by Dr. Elizabeth W. Kiddy, after the end of the original Johnson Grant.

In 2002, Elizabeth Kiddy, together with Kathleen Ozment, Chair of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, received a grant from the United States Department of Education. The two-year, TitleVI: Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Grant, has enabled Albright to expand the Latin American Studies program to more fully encompass the Caribbean, to develop faculty expertise, and to expand the course offerings and study abroad opportunities for our students.
