Q. What is an " Intake Session"?
A. An Intake Session is a meeting for the accused student to ask questions of disciplinary charges and rights. This is not a hearing. This is simply the meeting that occurs before an Administrative or Board Hearing. Intake Sessions are not provided for Preliminary Hearings. Students will be read their rights before the Preliminary Hearing.
The accused student reviews and signs the "Charges, Rights, and Choice of Hearing" form, which signifies that he/she acknowledges that he/she has been advised of the charges, choice of hearing, and his/her rights. Once the checklist is completed the accused student will receive one copy and a second copy will be kept on file. The appropriate Hearing Officer will be notified of the hearing request. The Hearing Officer or Assistant Director of Community Standards will then schedule the hearing for the student.
Q. What should I wear to the hearing?
A. It is suggested that students and hearing members where appropriate attire to the hearing.
Q. I just received a letter from the Office of Community Standards about a hearing, will I need a lawyer or parent?
A. NO. Neither attorneys nor parents are allowed in the hearing room, intake session, or meeting to find out results.
Q. Is this a criminal or civil proceeding?
A. NO. This is not a criminal nor a civil procedure, this is a College Administrative Process which is separate from the Criminal and Civil courts.
Q. What are some of the things that can happen?
A. Please review the compass. It states clearly the various sanctions that can be given to a student who has violated the Code of Conduct. Sanctions range from warning to expulsion.
Q. Can I bring a witness?
A. Yes, you are allowed to bring witnesses. If the witness chooses not to attend the hearing, you may provide a written statement by the witness.
Q. Do I still need to attend the hearing although I have met with the Dean and have discussed some requirements that I must complete?
A. Yes, the Office of Community Standards is separate from the Dean of Students Office. If the Dean should require students to fulfill obligations, this has no bearing on the actions that will be taken by the Office of Community Standards.
Q. I am a student and would like to join the Community Standards Hearing Board. How do I do that?
A. Students interested in joining should contact the Office of Community Standards in April. You will need to fill out an application. SGA, the Dean of Students Office, and the Office of Community Standards will approve all candidates. Training will be held in September.
