Students can use Greek and Latin courses to meet the general studies foreign language requirement. Courses at the 202-level and above also can be used to fulfill the general studies literature requirement.


Latin Courses

Teacher certification in Latin is available. Interested students should consult the Education Department.

The following courses are offered for students interested in gaining a reading knowledge of Latin, increasing fluency in the use of English and syntax, and understanding the Roman culture:

LAT 101
Elementary Latin I

The fundamentals of Latin syntax and vocabulary are developed through the study of original Latin sentences and passages. Some study of linguistics, English derivations and cognates, and brief readings from selected Latin authors are included
LAT 102
Elementary Latin II

Continuation of 101.
Prerequisite: LAT 101 or permission of instructor
LAT 201
Intermediate Latin

Completion of the study of Latin grammar and syntax with emphasis on the reading of Latin prose, particularly Cicero's orations.
Prerequisite: LAT 102 or permission of instructor
LAT 202
Latin Literature of The Golden Age

Intensive reading in Latin of the literature of The Golden Age, particularly the lyric poetry of Catullus and Horace, Vergil's Aeneid, and Vergil's Eclogues. Particular emphasis in the study of the development of literary genres (general studies literature).
Prerequisite: LAT 201 or permission of instructor
The following advanced courses are available upon a student's request and demonstration of competency beyond the intermediate level:
LAT 301
Advanced Latin Prose

Concentration on Ciceronian prose style and the works of outstanding Latin prose authors (Cicero's letters, Livy, and so on).
Prerequisite: LAT 202 or permission of instructor
LAT 302
Advanced Latin Poetry

Reading of Vergil's Bucolics and Georgics, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Juvenal's Satires.
Prerequisite: LAT 301 or permission of the instructor

LAT 401
Selected Topics

Readings of Latin literature to be based on individual student's prior study and experience (Roman comedy, St. Augustine, Medieval Latin, Latin Hymnody, and so on).
Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor
