King’s (PA) Sneaks by Volleyball in Season Finale

Saturday, November 1, 2008

WILKES-BARRE, PA - In their 2008 finale, the Albright Volleyball team battled back and forth with the host Monarchs of King’s College (PA) to eventually fall by the score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Lions to 5-28 on the year and managed a final conference record of 1-5.  King’s exploded on the scene in the first set defeating Albright 25-10.  The Red and White battled back to take set two by the score of 25-23.  The Lions then went onto take set three with a huge 25-17 win.  King’s managed to pull out a four point victory in the fourth set forcing the 15 point fifth set.

Unfortunately for the Lions, the fourth set loss took all the wind out of them as the Monarchs cruised to a 15-0 victory.  As has been the case in a lot of matches this season, errors killed the Lady Lions.  In total the Lions recorded 26 attack errors, two service errors, four ball handling errors, and six receiving errors.

Christina Yatron (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) did however post double figures in the kills column scoring 10 in the five set match.  Lauren Higgins (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) made a solid push at the setter position putting up 29 assists.  She also had five service aces to her name and six digs.  Reigning single match digs leader Kelly Nicodemus (Reading, PA/Holy Name) recorded 23 more digs to close out the 2008 season with a career best 528 digs.

Saturday’s match also marked the final match in the careers of Jennifer Lynch (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) and Jessica Higgins (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North).

Volleyball Falls in Crucial Conference Match

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

MACGRANTHAM, PA - With only one week remaining in the regular season, the Lady Lions (5-27/1-5 Commonwealth) found themselves in probably the most important match of the season Wednesday evening at Brubaker Auditorium.

Albright who entered play with a conference record of 1-3 faced off against the Falcons of Messiah College (17-6/3-3 Commonwealth), who entered the match with a record of 2-3.  Messiah in decisive fashion downed the Red and White in three quick sets securing their play-off birth.

The first two sets favored the host Falcons heavily, while in the third set, Albright once again tried to mount a come from behind rally that they have done on some many occasions this season when trailing 2-0.  Unfortunately the rally was short lived as Messiah pulled out a 26-24 win securing the final spot in the tournament.

Jennifer Lynch (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) and Kelly Nicodemus (Reading, PA/Holy Name) tried their best defensively earning 24 digs respectively.  Nicodemus who recently broke the all-time digs record in a single match, continued her tough play, but was unable to neutralize the Falcons offense.  Three individuals guided Messiah to the victory each recording seven kills on the night.

Meghan Morrissey also tallied a match high four aces which played a major part in the victory.  Meghan Wheeler (Belle Harbor, NY/Stella Maris) who tied the match high seven kills recorded a pair of aces for the Lady Lions.

Setting up a majority of the Falcons attacks was Lauren Bourdon who earned 21 assists in the three set match.  For the Red and White sophomore setter Lauren Higgins (Sachem, NY/Holbrook) totaled 15 assists.

Women’s Volleyball will close out their 2008 season this Saturday whey they travel to King’s College (PA) for non-conference match which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
