2009 MAC Swimming Championship WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - It was a busy two days for the Lions as they looked to earn their fourth conference championship.  In total Albright earned eight first place finishes in the final two days of competition.

On Saturday, the Lions started the afternoon off on a great note claiming victory in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.08.  In the first individual event of the afternoon Matt O’Neill (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) pulled out a close victory in the 100 yard butterfly.  His final time of 54.44 seconds was a season best for the sophomore.  Chris Sheerer

Jack Kubacki (Reading, PA/Antietam) was also a top five finisher in the 100 fly with a time of 54.90 seconds which earned him fourth place.  Standout Eric Kramer (Watsontown, PA/Warrior Run) added another top finish to his resume this time in the 200 yard freestyle.  Kramer’s time of 1:44.38 was a career best finish.  In the 100 yard breaststroke, Jordan Hash (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehanock) claimed fourth place in the event with a time of 1:01.77.

At Right:  Sophomore Chris Sheerer was named the 2009 David B. Eavenson Award Winner

Chris Sheerer (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) kept the momentum alive for Albright in the 100 yard backstroke.  Following a record setting performance on Friday, Sheerer took another first place finish with a time of 52.52 seconds.  That mark was a career best time for the sophomore and was just seven-hundredths of a second away from tying the conference record of 52.45.

Albright ended day two with a second place finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay, falling to Widener University by six seconds.

Going into the final day of competition the Lions knew that they needed to get some top finishes.  The afternoon began with Kyle Torrens (West Chester, PA/West Chester East), and Ryan McGroarty (Media, PA/Penncrest) finishing in second and third place respectively in the long 1,650 yard freestyle.  Torrens time of 17:11.33 was a new personal best.  McGroarty also recorded a new personal best in the event with a time of 17:13.73.

Sheerer once again proved to be the driving force for the Red and White as he claimed victory in the 200 yard backstroke, with a time of 1:54.04.  His finish which was two seconds ahead of the closest competitor was a career best.  Behind Sheerer were Sean Zajdel (Yardley, PA/Pennsburg) and John Ferrara (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest).  Zajdel posted a fourth place finish (2:02.00), and Ferrara a seventh place finish (2:04.69).

Moving onto the 100 yard freestyle, Kramer earned a time of 47.78 to earn his final first place finish of the season.  Kubacki closed out the event in fourth place with a time of 48.64.

In the last individual event, the 200 yard butterfly, Zach McElheny (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) and O’Neill earned the top two times.  McElheny took first with a time of 2:01.67, with O’Neill right on his heels the entire way to earn a time of 2:02.26.

Albright as a team would claim the day’s final victory in the 400 yard freestyle relay.  The time of 3:11.26 was almost one second better than their Widener adversaries.

Unfortunately, the Lions efforts were not enough as Widener earned their fourth straight conference title.  Albright finished in second place with a total of 637.5 points, which was almost 200 points more than this year’s third place finisher.  Despite the loss, the Lions did not walk away empty handed as Sheerer was named this year’s David B. Eavenson Award Winner.

Sheerer’s time was also a career best mark for the sophomore.  The win marked the second consecutive year that Sheerer has won the 200 IM at the MAC Championships.

Matt O’Neill (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) was also a part of the 200 IM as the sophomore swimmer earned a final time of 2:06.63 which was good enough for ninth place overall.  From there the Lions Jack Kubacki (Reading, PA/Antietam) finished in second place in the 50 yard freestyle with a final mark of 22.18 seconds.

Jordan Hash (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehanock), John Ferrara (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest), and Sean Zajdel (Yardley, PA/Pennsburg) also competed in the 50.  Hash earned a final time of 22.46 seconds (9th place) while Ferrara and Zajdel closed out the event for the Red and White with final times of 23.02 and 23.03 respectively.

The final event would belong to the Lions as the 400 yard medley relay team of Sheerer, Hash, O’Neill, and Kramer recorded the top finish with a time of 3:34.04, which was nearly two seconds ahead of Misericordia’s top relay team.
