Women’s Soccer Falls to Arcadia in Season Finale

Saturday, November 1, 2008

READING, PA - A two goal second half from the Knights of Arcadia University (9-7-2/2-3-1 Commonwealth) proved to be the deciding factor as the Lions were defeated in their season finale Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

Despite keeping the score even at 0-0 in the first 45 minutes, the Knights kicked it into high gear in the second half totaling eight shots to earn the 2-0 victory.  Janelle Jablsonski led the way for her team scoring the first goal of the contest as well as assisting on the second in the 86th minute.

Albright did however have its chances in the first half but were unable to capitalize; giving the Knights the opportunity they needed in the second.  Goalkeeper Keeley Peltz (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) played extremely well as she completely shut down Arcadia’s offense on numerous occasions.  In total the freshman goalie managed eight saves to close out her rookie season.

Freshman Heather Fitzgerald (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) recorded a pair of shots with one of them being saved by Knights goalkeeper Jennie Groves.  As the game winded down the intensity and physical play began to increase with cards being issued to both sides on top of the 15 fouls that were called.

Albright College closes out its season with an overall record of 7-10 and was 0-6 in the Commonwealth Conference.  The game also marked the final contest in the careers of Aileen Duddy (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional) and Melissa Banks (Gilboa, NY/Gilboa-Conesville Central).

Women’s Soccer Eases by Penn State Harrisburg

Saturday, October 18, 2008

READING, PA - Looking to end a three game skid and even their record, the Women’s Soccer team (7-7) played host to Penn. State Harrisburg (4-8) Saturday evening at Shirk Stadium.

The Lady Lions wasted little time offensively netting the matches first goal in the 19th minute.  The goal which originated from a Kimberly Spataro (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) corner kick was flicked to the back of the Harrisburg goal box by freshman sweeper Lauren Panichelle (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), which was then headed home by Amy Hoelscher (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg)

Albright would continue to dominate offensively not allowing the Harrisburg defense a moment to catch their breath.  Despite the constant onslaught, the Lady Lions would not put another dent on the scoreboard for the rest of the first half.

However in the second half, the Albright offense came out firing once again.  Making it a 2-0 game was Allie Yoder (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) who netted her second goal of the season in the 57th minute.  Freshman forward Heather Fitzgerald (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) sealed the victory less than two minutes later on an unassisted goal, her fifth of the year.

Goalkeepers Keeley Peltz (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) and Olivia Giuliano (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) combined for one save in the shared shutout.  In total the Albright offense recorded 11 shots as compared to Harrisburg’s two.  Albright also led their opponent in corner kicks totaling four more (6-2) by the final horn.

Women’s Soccer returns to action next Saturday when they host Elizabethtown College in a Commonwealth Conference match scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Shirk Stadium.  Live stats will be available for that contest and can be viewed at http://www.albright.edu/athletics/livestats/xlive.htm.
