2006 Albright College Field Hockey Game Stories


October 30, 2006: FDU-Florham 1, Albright 0

Madison, NJ - FDU-Florham defeated Albright 1-0 in the final game of the 2006 season for the Lady Lions. Albright ends the season with a 6-12 record, while the Devils improve to 13-6.

FDU-Florham out shot the visiting Lady Lions 5-2 in the first half, but four saves from freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson helped keep the match scoreless. The Devils got on the board 5:31 into the second half when Christina Fabian scored off an assist from Debbie Hillman to give FDU a 1-0 lead. Albright showed more offensive punch in the second period, producing five shots and five penalty corners, but could not find a way to beat Devil keeper Jamie SanFillipo. SanFillipo made four saves in recording the shutout.


October 28, 2006: Albright at Notre Dame cancelled

Reading, PA - Albright's game at College of Notre Dame in Maryland has been cancelled due to poor field conditions. The game will not be rescheduled this season.


October 24, 2006: Widener 4, Albright 1

Reading, PA - Albright jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead over Widener Tuesday afternoon, but the Pride responded with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 win over the Lady Lions in a blustery Shirk Stadium. The loss drops Albright to 6-11 on the season and 0-7 in conference play, while Widener improves to 12-5, 4-3, and clinches a spot in the Commonwealth Conference post-season tournament.

Things started well for Albright on senior day, as the Lady Lions got on the scoreboard less than a minute into the game. Taking the play right to the Pride, Albright was awarded a penalty corner. The Lady Lions cashed in, as sophomore Jen White scored off assists from junior Jordan Toroniewski and sophomore Lindsay Neal to give Albright a 1-0 lead just 55 seconds into the contest. Widener drew even in the fifth minute, getting a goal from Missy Pappas to tie the score at one.

After the fast start, the teams battled through the rest of the half without another goal. Widener took its first lead of the game nine minutes into the second half on a goal from Erica Rose, then extended the lead to 3-1 in the 56th minute on a goal from Colleen Guille. Albright had chances to close the gap in the final minutes, but could not find the answer to Pride goalkeeper Kate Heritage. Widener put the game away when Jaime Carr scored with 43 seconds remaining to make the score 4-1.

Albright will travel to Notre Dame College of Maryland on Saturday for a non-conference match.


October 21, 2006: Albright 4, DVC 1

Reading, PA - Albright exploded for four goals in the second half to defeat Delaware Valley 4-1 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game in Shirk Stadium.With the win Albright improves to 6-10 on the season, while the Aggies see their record drop to 8-8.

After playing scoreless hockey for the first 35 minutes of the game, the Lady Lions overwhelmed Delaware Valley in the second half. Senior Sabrina Perry started the scoring for Albright with her third goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Lindsay Neal, 10 minutes into the second period. Just under two minutes later the Lady Lions made it 2-0 when senior Angela Gardner scored her team-leading 10th goal of 2006. Delaware Valley pulled within one when Lauren Lansberry scored in the 60th minute, but that would be as close as the Aggies would get. Neal's unassisted goal with 3:44 left in the game, her fifth of the season, restored Albright's lead to two at 3-1. A minute and nine seconds later junior Jordan Toroniewski scored to put the game away for Albright, as the game ended at 4-1.

Albright will play its last home game of the 2006 season on Tuesday at 3:30 against Commonwealth Conference foe Widener.


October 19, 2006: Moravian 1, Albright 0

Bethlehem, PA - Moravian's Kayla Carson scored the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 win over Albright Thursday in Bethlehem. The loss drops Albright to 0-6 in conference play and 5-10 overall, while Moravian ups its record to 1-5, 3-13.

Albright controlled most of the play in the first half, taking eight shots to just two for the Greyhounds. The Lady Lions had eight penalty corners in the half, but could not solve Moravian keeper Amanda Gaun. Albright freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson held up her end for the Lady Lions, recording two saves in the half to keep the game scoreless. The second half was a different story, as Moravian out shot Albright 6-0 and totaled five penalty corners to none for the Lady Lions. The Greyhounds finally broke through with Carson's goal with just 7:32 remaining in the contest, and held on to capture the victory. Nickerson finished the day with six saves for Albright.

Albright will host Delaware Valley on Saturday at 1:00 in Shirk Stadium.


October 17, 2006: Albright 5, Immaculata 1

Immaculata, PA - Albright overcame an early Immaculata goal to score five unanswered times and take a 5-1 win over the Macs in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon. With the win the Lady Lions raise their record to 5-9 in 2006.

Albright was barely off the bus when Immaculata got on the scoreboard. Kati DiNatale scored for the Macs just 29 seconds into the contest give the home team the early 1-0 lead. That would be the high-point for the hosts, however, as Albright turned things around in a hurry. Sophomore Lindsay Neal scored in the 11th minute off an assist from senior Sabrina Perry to tie the game at one. 15 minutes later the floodgates opened for the Lady Lions. Sophomore Jennifer White scored the first of her two goals on the day in the 27th minute, assisted by junior Jordan Toroniewski. Two minutes later senior Kate Haines scored, assisted by Neal, and White followed with her second goal just 1:26 after Haines' tally, again assisted by Neal. The outburst left Albright with a 4-1 lead with less than five minutes to play in the half, and Immaculata never threatened again. Senior Angela Gardner scored the only goal of the second half, the 40th goal of her career, to complete the 5-1 win for the Lady Lions. Freshman Logan Nickerson had 11 saves in the game, including eight in the second half to keep Albright well ahead of the Macs.


October 13, 2006: Susquehanna 2, Albright 0

Reading, PA - Susquehanna defeated Albright 2-0 in a Commonwealth Conference match Friday night in Shirk Stadium. The loss drops Albright to 4-9 on the season and 0-5 in conference play. Susquehanna is now 4-9, 2-3.

Susquehanna took the lead 15 minutes into the contest on a goal by Margaret Young that would prove to be the only score of the first half. Albright fired 13 shots in the first half, but couldn't find a way to get the tying goal. The Crusaders scored again with just over 16 minutes left in the game to take a 2-0 lead. Susquehanna slowed the Albright attack in the second half, allowing the Lady Lions just six shots in closing out the win. Freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson had 10 saves in net for Albright.


October 11, 2006: Stockton 2, Albright 0

Pomona, NJ - Albright fell to Richard Stockton 2-0 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops Albright to 4-8 on the year, while the Seagulls push their record to 7-5.

Albright out shot Stockton 16-9 in the game, but could not solve Seagull keeper Caitlin Nolan, who had nine saves on the day. Stockton took an early lead when Sarah Stafford scored in the 10th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The game stayed 1-0 well into the second half, until Aimee Rendine scored with 7:30 left in the game to give the Seagulls a two-goal cushion. That would be all the scoring for the afternoon as Stockton took the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson totaled five saves in net for the Lady Lions.

Albright will host Susquehanna Friday night at 6:00 in Shirk Stadium in a Commonwealth Conference match.


October 7, 2006: Juniata 2, Albright 1 (OT)

Huntingdon, PA - Kim Wagner's second goal of the game, 11:17 into sudden death overtime, gave 14th ranked Juniata College a 2-1 win over Albright Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Lady Lions fall to 4-7 on the season and 0-4 in the Commonwealth Conference, while Juniata improves to 10-1, 3-1.

Juniata controlled play for most of the game, but Albright did not squander its chance when opportunity arose. Despite being out-shot 7-2 in the first half, senior Angela Gardner scored 20 minutes into the match off an assist from sophomore Jen White to give Albright a 1-0 lead. Freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson made five saves to keep Juniata scoreless, and the game remained 1-0 heading to half-time. In the second half the host Eagles continued to control the game, holding a 16-0 advantage in shots. Wagner finally was able to beat Simpson with just over 12 minutes remaining to tie the game at one. The score remained 1-1 after 70 minutes of regulation time, sending the game to overtime, where Wagner's second goal did in the Lady Lions. Simpson finished the match with 19 saves.


October 5, 2006: Albright 4, Goucher 0

Reading, PA - Senior Angela Gardner became Albright's all-time lead goal scorer on Thursday, scoring twice to lead the Lady Lions to a 4-0 win over Goucher. She now has 40 goals in her career, passing the old mark of 39 set by Sharon Hitz from 1980-83. Gardner added an assist in the game to give her five points and 97 for her career, which passes Hitz's mark of 95.

Gardner opened the scoring just 7:42 into the game off an assist from sophomore Lindsay Neal to give Albright a 1-0 lead. Just a minute and a half later Neal increased the Lady Lion advantage to 2-0 with her third goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Jen White. Gardner's second goal of the game, her seventh of the season, came in the 18th minute with an assist from senior Sabrina Perry to put Albright comfortably on top 3-0.

Albright controlled play throughout the second half, and picked up goal number four when White scored her fifth goal of the year in the 61st minute with assists from Gardner and Neal. That was more than enough of a cushion for the Lady Lions, who limited Goucher to just four shots in the game. Freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson was not severely tested in the contest but did make one big save to preserve the second consecutive shutout for Albright.

The Lady Lions return to conference play on Saturday in Huntingdon with a12:00 game against Juniata.


September 30, 2006: Albright 9, Hood 0

Reading, PA - Albright handed visiting Hood College a 9-0 beating Saturday night under the lights in Shirk Stadium. The win raises Albright's record to 3-6 on the season, while Hood falls to 1-7.

The Lady Lions wasted little time asserting themselves in the game, as senior Angela Gardner scored the first of her two goals just 1:16 into the game to give Albright a 1-0 lead. Junior Jordan Toroniewski scored in the 13th minute for the Lady Lions as the floodgates began to open. Sophomore Jen White and junior Maura Kernaghan added first half goals as Albright built a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The second half featured more of the same for Albright, as Kernaghan notched her second goal of the game four minutes in to make the score 5-0. Toroniewski followed three minutes later with her second score of the evening to put Albright on top 6-0. Sophomore Brittany Rothermel scored twice for Albright in the span of 54 seconds in the 52nd minute to make the score 8-0, and Gardner then finished the scoring with her second goal of the night to make the score 9-0. Albright out-shot Hood 46-0 in the game, as freshman goalkeeper did not need to make a save in recording the shutout.

Albright returns to action on Thursday with a 4:30 game against Goucher in Shirk Stadium.


September 28, 2006: Lebanon Valley 3, Albright 0

Annville, PA - Lebanon Valley defeated Albright 3-0 in a Commonwealth Conference match Thursday afternoon in Annville. The Dutchmen, ranked #11 in the country, improved to 6-1 overall and evened their conference slate at 1-1, while Albright fall to 2-6, 0-3 with the loss.

Lebanon Valley got off to a quick start, as Claire Behney scored just over eight minutes in to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead. About seven minutes later the game was halted due to thunderstorms in the area. After more than an hour delay, play resumed, with LVC continuing to pressure Albright. The Lady Lions were out shot 19-1 in the half, but freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson had eight saves to keep the score at 1-0 after 35 minutes of play. Albright was able to apply a little more pressure in the second half, but it was LVC who came up with the game's second goal, when Alex Wolfe scored in the 52nd minute. Any hopes of an Albright rally were snuffed out when Christine Schairer scored on a penalty shot with 4:50 remaining in the game to give the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead.

Albright returns home to host Hood College on Saturday at 7:00 in Shirk Stadium.


September 26, 2006: Albright 6, Marywood 1

Reading, PA - Albright jumped on visiting Marywood with four goals in the first half and rolled to a 6-1 win over the Pacers Tuesday night in Shirk Stadium. The win snapped a four-game skid for the Lady Lions, who are now 2-5 on the season, while Marywood falls to 2-5.

Senior Angela Gardner opened the scoring with the first of her two goals on the night nine minutes into the contest, assisted by senior Megan Beidler. Less than a minute later junior Jordan Toroniewski converted a penalty stroke to give the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead. Marywood scored in the 13 th minute to pull within one, but Gardner's second goal restored Albright's two-goal lead with 17 minutes left in the half. Sophomore Brittany Rothermel had the assist on Gardner's second goal. Beidler gave Albright a 4-1 lead with a goal off an assist from senior Emma Scholl in the 32 nd minute as the Lady Lions took a commanding lead at the half. Sophomore Lindsay Neal and freshman Kelly Zepp added second-half goals as Albright pulled away for the win.


September 23, 2006: Elizabethtown 4, Albright 0

Reading, PA - Three second-half goals helped Elizabethtown blow open a close game and take a 4-0 win over Albright in Commonwealth Conference play Saturday afternoon in Shirk Stadium. Albright is now 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, while the Blue Jays improve to 6-1, 2-0.

Despite being out-shot 18-11 in the first half, Albright trailed by just one at the break. Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Simpson recorded 10 saves in the half, with the only Blue Jay goal coming off the stick of Brandy Spriggle with seven and a half minutes left before the half. Albright was unable to capitalize on any of its chances, however, and the Blue Jays pulled away in the second half. Laura Rinck scored 10 minutes into the second half, then Brenna Noon scored the first of her two goals seven minutes later as Elizabethtown extended its lead to 3-0. Noon finished the scoring with 12:35 remaining to give the visitors the 4-0 win.

Simpson finished the game with 13 saves, while Kristen Callaghan had three saves for Elizabethtown.

Albright will next play on Tuesday, when the Lady Lions host Marywood under the light of Shirk Stadium at 7:00.


September 20, 2006: DeSales 4, Albright 1

Center Valley, PA - DeSales scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-1 win over Albright in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at DeSales. The loss drops Albright to 1-4 on the season, while DeSales improves to 4-2.

The Bulldogs got on the board first, getting a goal from Ashley Sparango nine minutes into the contest. Albright tied the score in the 21st minute when freshman Kelly Zepp scored her second goal of the season, assisted by junior Jordan Toroniewski. Albright's momentum was short-lived, however, as DeSales regained the lead just four minutes later when Jen Pulcini scored the first of her two goals on the day to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage. DeSales would add to its lead before the half when Meghan Iudicello scored in the 30th minute, making the score 3-1 DeSales. The Bulldogs got the only goal of the second half off the stick of Pulcini and took the 4-1 victory. Freshman Brittany Simpson had nine saves in the game for Albright.


September 16, 2006: Messiah 4, Albright 0

Grantham, PA - Albright fell to nationally ranked Messiah College 4-0 in Commonwealth Conference action Saturday afternoon in Grantham. The Lady Lions hung with Messiah, ranked #2 in the nation, for a half, trailing just 1-0 after 35 minutes of play. The Falcons pulled away in the second half, however, scoring three times to take the 4-0 win. Albright freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson faced 41 shots in the contest and finished with 24 saves.


September 12, 2006: Gwynedd-Mercy 3, Albright 1

Gwynedd, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy scored three straight goals to overcome Albright's 1-0 lead and defeat the Lady Lions 3-1 in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops Albright to 1-2 on the season, while the Griffins improve to 2-1.

Senior forward Angela Gardner (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) got Albright off to a fast start, scoring her first goal of the season 11:14 into the contest to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead. That lead held up through most of the half, until Gwynedd's Melissa Burks slipped a shot past Albright goalkeeper Brittany Simpson (Morgan Hill, CA/Gilroy) with a minute 15 seconds left in half to tie the score at one.

12 minutes into the second half the Griffins took the lead on a goal by Ashley Blackwell. Nicole Dowling scored Gwynedd's third goal of the game with 14 minutes remaining, and the Griffins clamped down on defense to hold the lead and take the win. Albright managed just four shots in the game, two in each half. Simpson finished with three saves in net for the Lady Lions.

Albright opens its Commonwealth Conference schedule on Saturday with a trip to defending conference champion Messiah Saturday for a 1:00 tilt.


September 6, 2006: Albright 6, Cedar Crest 0

Reading, PA - Albright sophomore forward Jenn White (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) scored three goals in a span of two minutes and 28 seconds early in the second half to help the Lady Lions roll past Cedar Crest 6-0 Wednesday night in Shirk Stadium. The win evens Albright's record at 1-1, while Cedar Crest falls to 0-1 on the season.

Albright dominated from the start, and controlled play for the entire 70 minutes. The Lady Lions out-shot Cedar Crest 26-1 in the opening half, but could only manage a 2-0 lead at the break. Senior Sabrina Perry (Drexel Hill, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) got Albright on the board with a goal 20 minutes in, assisted by senior Angela Gardner (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) and junior Jordan Toroniewski (Warminster, PA/St. Basil Academy). Sophomore Lindsay Neal ((Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) gave Albright a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute, assisted by Toroniewski and sophomore Brittany Rothermel (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg).

In the second half, White took over. She score her first goal six minutes into the half off an assist from senior Megan Beidler (Robesonia, PA/Conrad Weiser). A minute and 21 seconds later she found the net again, this time assisted by Neal. It took White another minute and seven seconds to complete the hat trick, scoring another goal assisted by Beidler. That gave Albright a 5-0 lead, and the Lady Lions cruised to victory from there. Freshman Kelly Zepp (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) completed the scoring with her first career goal to give Albright the 6-0 win. Freshman Brittany Simpson (Morgan Hill, CA/Gilroy) posted seven saves in notching the shutout in her first collegiate start.

Albright will next face Gwynedd-Mercy on Tuesday the 12th at 4:00.


September 1, 2006: Alvernia 4, Albright 0

Reading, PA -After a scoreless 35 minutes of play in the first half, Alvernia scored four times in the second half to take a 4-0 non-conference win over Albright Friday afternoon in the opening game of the 2006 season for each team.

The Crusaders carried the bulk of the play in the first half, but they were unable to score on freshman goalkeeper Logan Nickerson (Dover, DE/Dover). Playing in her first collegiate game, Nickerson kept Alvernia off the scoreboard for the first 35 minutes, recording 12 saves in a soggy Shirk Stadium. Albright had some chances as well, but were unable to convert as the half ended with the score 0-0.

Alvernia was finally able to solve Nickerson early in the second half, when Becky Macchione scored three and a half minutes in to give the visiting Crusaders a 1-0 lead. A goal by Megan Novogratz with just under 17 minutes left in the contest gave Alvernia a 2-0 lead, and the Crusaders added two more goals in the final 10 minutes to pull away from the host Lions. Albright did manage six shots in the second half, but the Lions could not cut into the Alvernia lead. Nickerson finished with 19 saves on the day, while Alvernia's Mandy Yocum and Audrey Hoffman each posted two saves in combining for the shutout.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday, September 6, when Cedar Crest College visits Shirk Stadium for a 7:00 match.
