 Five from Field Hockey Named to NFHCA DIII National Academic Squad

National Field Hockey Coaches AssociationCHANDLER, Ari. - On Thursday, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced this year’s Division III National Academic Squad.  A total of five players from the 2008 Albright Field Hockey team were named to this year’s squad.  To even be considered for this national award, the student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.30 or higher through their first semester of the 2008-2009 academic year.

Earning a place on this year’s squad was senior Valerie Swartz (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby), sophomores Pamela Swope (Reading, PA/Antietam) and Briana Taylor (Tobyhanna, PA/Poccono Mt. West), and freshmen Kimberly Hummel (Prospect Park, PA/Ridley) and Beth Moran (Havertown, PA/Merion Mercy Academy).

This honor marks the second outstanding academic award that Swartz, Swope, and Taylor have received this year.  In December the trio was also named to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Confederation (MASCAC) Academic Honor Roll.

 Albright Represented on MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll

MACANNVILLE, PA - The Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Fall Academic Honor Roll, which notes academic excellence by student-athletes, contains 561 honorees which was announced by Executive Director Ken Andrews Tuesday morning.

The Honor Roll comprises those student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) or higher and completed the playing season in good standing.

Albright College had a solid representation on this year’s Academic Honor Roll as 36 student-athletes were recognized by the conference.  Included on this year’s team was Men’s Soccer First Team All-Conference selection Maarten Kootstra (Mt. Penn, PA/Antietam), and Football First Team All-Conference honorees Tanner Kelly (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) and Matt Christ (Birdsboro, PA/Reading Central Catholic).

 Neal Garners Second Team All-Conference Honors for Field Hockey

Lindsay NealANNVILLE, PA - On Thursday, the Commonwealth Conference office released the names of this year’s First and Second Team All-Conference selections for Field Hockey.  Earning a place on the Second team was senior midfielder Lindsay Neal (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area).

The honor was the first in the career of Neal who closed out the 2008 season with three goals and three assists.  The senior midfielder started all 19 contests for the Lions and compiled a total of 62 shots and had a pair of defensive saves.

During her prolific career, the Phoenixville native appeared in every possible match since coming to Albright posting 72 total appearances.  Within that time she netted 17 goals and had 30 assists.  Currently ranked first all-time in career assists, Neal also holds the single season assist record which set in her freshman year with 10 assists.

Neal who ended her career with the lone goal in the 2-1 loss against Richard Stockton College earlier this month led the Lady Lions to a final season record of 4-15, 1-4 in the Commonwealth Conference.
