 Albright Athletics Weekly Wrap-Up

September 27, 2008 - October 5, 2008

The Red and White had an interesting week across the sports spectrum as the fall was finally here to stay and the true atmosphere of college sports was in the air.  Some sports teams played like champions, while others are working towards that championship level.  Without further a due, let’s check out the past week in Albright sports.

Cross-Country

Albright’s men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to Bethlehem, PA for the 35th annual running of the Lehigh University Paul Short Run.  The men’s team finished 34th of the 41 teams and freshman George Cook led the Lions with a 129th place finish with a 28:21 overall time.  Robert Keller finished behind Cook for second-best Albright time.  Keller finished with a 28:41 time and a 157th place finish.  For the Lady Lions, Gabrielle Stine led the women with a 196th place finish and a time of 26 minutes exactly.   Melony Alcorn finished second for the Lady Lions with a 190th place finish and a 26:47 time.  In their division, the women’s team finished 34th overall out of the 37 teams.

Men’s Golf

The Albright golf team played in the Messiah College Falcon Classic and finished 11th out of the 19 teams.  The Lions shot a 349 (+61) in the one day tournament.  Sophomore Matt Osorio led the team with a top 20 finish, finishing 18th overall and shot an 80 (+8) on the day.  It was Osorio’s first top 20 finish of the season.  Trevor Hamlin came in behind Osorio for the Red and White, shooting an 88, tied for 54th place.

Women’s Tennis (1-6/0-3 Commonwealth)

The Lady Lions played in two matches last week as they tried to improve upon their season thus far.  On Tuesday, Albright lost to defending Commonwealth Conference Elizabethtown College, 9-0.  Ashley Woodcock and Lisa Archibald put up excellent individual efforts in trying to guide the Red and White to a win.  On Friday, with the team hungry to rebound from the earlier loss, the women dropped 6-3 decision to Penn State Berks.  Marissa Cooperman put up a valiant effort against the Nittany Lions’ toughest opponent in Nicole Cresswell but lost (6-3, 6-7, 7-4).  Lisa Archibald and Melissa Yake recorded singles wins for the team.  For Archibald, it was her third singles win of the year.

Men’s Soccer (3-6/0-1 Commonwealth)

On Thursday,  the Lions squeaked by the Gwynedd-Mercy Griffins 1-0 in a non-conference match.  Midfielder Chris Mignogna scored the lone Albright goal in the 53rd minute.  Each team had 10 shots on goal for the game, but the Lions proved to be the more efficient team, putting one of their shots between the goalposts for the win.  On Saturday, looking to continue their winning ways, the Red and White fell to Lebanon Valley College in the Commonwealth Conference opener, 5-2.  The Lions kept the physical game close with the score knotted up at one apiece at the half; however, LVC came out with vengeance as they outshot the Lions 15-5 in the second half and 4-1 on the scoreboard.  Chas DeSanto and Mark Yost scored goals in the Albright loss.

Women’s Soccer (5-4/0-1 Commonwealth)

The Lady Lion soccer team looked to continue its winning ways in two contests last week.  On Wednesday, Heather Fitzgerald came off the bench to lead the team with two goals in a 4-2 victory over cross-town rival Alvernia.  Isla Wilczinski and Amy Hoelscher added one goal apiece and Keeley Peltz had five saves for the Red and White.  Albright outshot the Crusaders 18-11 for the game.  On Saturday the team traveled to Annville, PA to play in their Commonwealth Conference opener against Lebanon Valley College.  The Lady Lions were stopped cold in their tracks in the tough 3-1 loss.  Entering the second half with a narrow 1-0 lead, LVC’s offense exploded for three unanswered goals to take the win.  Aileen Duddy scored the early Albright goal as LVC snapped the Lady Lions’ five-game winning streak.

Field Hockey (3-7/0-1 Commonwealth)

The Lady Lions traveled to Grantham on Tuesday to play nationally-ranked Messiah.  The fifth-ranked Falcons failed to disappoint as they defeated Albright 9-0.  On Thursday, Albright played a tight game against Cabrini.  Shannon Mulhern scored in the 74th minute to steal the 1-0 victory.  Kaitlyn Johnstone made three saves and Albright outshot Cabrini 7-5.

Volleyball (3-19/0-2 Commonwealth)

The women’s volleyball team had two matches this past week.  On Tuesday, the Lady Lions lost to Penn State Berks 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21).  Meghan Wheeler and Cassandra Campbell had nine kills each to lead the team.  The team once again fought hard in the third and final set to keep the game going, but could not complete the comeback.  On Saturday, the Red and White played at the FDU-Florham Invitational in Madison, New Jersey.  Overall the team managed to finish the tournament with a record of 1-3.  The Lady Lions initially started off the weekend dropping their first two matches 3-0 to both Richard Stockton and Baptist Bibles.  Looking to bounce back from Friday’s losses, the Red and White came back on Saturday with a new intensity and determination.  In their first match against St. Joseph’s College (LI), Albright made it a five set match keeping the score close throughout the contest.  St. Joe’s managed to pull off the fifth set victory defeating the Lady Lions by the score of 15-12.  In the tournament closer, Albright dominated Wesley College defeating them by the score of 3-1.  As a whole the team did extremely well throughout the weekend and for her efforts sophomore setter Lauren Higgins was named to the All-Tournament team.

Football (3-1/1-0 Middle Atlantic)

On Saturday, the football team played at home against FDU-Florham in the annual Pretzel Bowl.  Looking to open up conference play with a victory the Lions took care of business in defeating the Devils 24-17.  The game was extremely close going into the half (10-9).  Special Teams proved to be the deciding factor in the contest.  Albright’s William Alston had a career day, returning both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns.  The kickoff, which spanned 80-yards, was key in helping the Lions extend their narrow lead and helped them take control of the game.  Alston would add another 52-yard punt return for a touchdown as he would be awarded the team MVP Award following the conclusion of the game as well as earning Middle Atlantic Conference Special Teams player of the week honors.  Also starring for the special teams unit was Brett Gaul, who blocked a field goal and an extra point.  Tanner Kelly finished the day with 19-of31 passing for 136 yards with one interception.  Nate Romig and AJ Hill combined for nine catches for 83 yards.  Running back Josan Holmes led the Lion rushing attack, notching eight carries for 113 yards and one touchdown.
