Life's Little Surprises

I love when I don't tell people how many seconds they got until the camera goes "SNAP"

I turned 21 the other day. I didn't gain a whole year overnight, I just turned a day older. The day that it fell on happened to be my life anniversary telling me that I've been around for 21 years. Great. I felt very strange because it felt like I only turned 20 a couple weeks ago.

I try to keep my life anniversary date on the down low, but somehow, my friends found out. I got a call from a friend saying that I had a letter to pick up from his place and I had to do it at that moment (around midnight) because he was leaving soon. As I change out of my pajamas, I think to myself "What the heck is a letter for me doing over there." I grab my camera to take a picture with him and go over to my friend's flat. I see him waiting in the kitchen from the front window. I instantly think, "Oh snap, I'm going to get killed."

(He's the one who called me)

But I go in anyways. He meets me in the hallway of doors and I see that his eyes are red. Drunk? Stoned? I didn't really care. So he says, "Hey Salaam, what's up?" I come in and respond and say, "It's all good. Why you leaving tomorrow, man?" And he said, "Ah well you know." That's what you say when you don't wanna lie and don't wanna tell the truth. He added, "The letter is in my room, so let's go." At this point I think, "I'm seriously about to get killed. Why not just give me the letter when he met me at the door!" And he says again, "We're going to MY ROOM to get the letter." And then BAM from behind a door slammed open and I heard,

"SURPRISE!!!!"

I stood there. Blinked. Had no idea what the heck was going on. Hell, I forgot it was my life anniversary! They sang happy birthday and all that jazz and we went into the kitchen and chilled.

This was the first party anybody has ever thrown for me. I was soooo happy. Hell, when I was leaving home to come here, I had to organize my leaving party! This was a total shock and awe.

(I wasn't crying, just absolutely amazed)

We left at around 3:30 AM and I came home to find that my sister had sent me a poem over a chat program. It was pretty nice. Then I went to bed, woke up, went to breakfast. I found out at breakfast that my friends had more things planned for me. I was so excited inside. I told them this was SO unnecessary. I'm nobody special, why go through so much trouble for me? Needless to say, they didn't halt in their endeavors to embarrass me and as soon as we were about to leave the dining hall, everybody in the hall sang 'Happy Birthday' to me. hahaha that was HILARIOUS.

Greg, the organizer of the whole thing, Lindsay (his girlfriend), Aizaan, and myself then went into town to buy some lunch and take a bus to the beach. I didn't know we were going to the beach!
Mind you, this is the North Sea Beach. The End of the World, essentially.

We got off the bus and I saw some pretty flowers.

We walked through rolling green hills full of sheep and holes.

We thought we'd see the beach after the first hill we walked over (in the previous picture) but we only found more hills. And when we walked over those ones, we saw MORE hills. But then, as we walked to the crest of the next hill, I heard the sound of waves. BAM I came off the summit and GLORY GLORY the sea was right there! It was majestically fantastic! Moral of this part is to never ever run on hills because you never know if there is a slope on the other side.

I conquered the beach.

It was loads of fun. Greg and I ran up the coast and kicked around a futbol and then we stopped and I started digging a hole as deep as a I could. I concluded that we needed to deposit a time capsule into it within the next week telling our stories to the future. Afterwards, we started a sand castle and Greg ran away to find Lindsay because she had run off down the coast somewhere.

So I went to where Aizaan was so she wouldn't get kidnapped or something and made a sandcastle.

The day was rapidly coming to an end at this point and we had to pack up and begin our return journey up the hill, through the valleys, and back to the bus stop.
