TURKEY FOR ME AND TURKEY FOR YOU

All in a Word

By Aileen Fisher

T for time to be together, turkey, talk, and tangy weather.
H for harvest stored away, home, and hearth, and holiday.
A for autumn's frosty art, and abundance in the heart.
N for neighbors, and November, nice things, new things to remember.
K for kitchen, kettles' croon, kith and kin expected soon.
S for sizzles, sights, and sounds, and something special that abounds.
That spells ~~~THANKS---for joy in living and a jolly good Thanksgiving.

It is Thanksgiving and a time for giving. As I mentioned in my previous entry for SAAC (student athletic advisory council) we wanted to give and do something in the Reading Community. We made this wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner at an Albright Employee's house right off campus. Coach started the bird at her house and then brought it to Lou's house to finish it. Meanwhile, we made mashed potatoes from scratch, stuffing, gravy, corn...a plethora of food! The corn was a little tricky...we could NOT figure out how to work the can opener. There were about 10 of us all trying to figure it out. After a half hour of stabbing the can of corn, calling mothers for advise, and staring awestruck at the stupid device, the can of corn opened!! It was a miracle! It was one of those new, fancy can openers that open it along the outside so you don't get cut. You learn something new every day....that day it was how to work a can opener. Oh to be a college student. Let me tell you...we all can cook a mean batch of ramen, so you can't make fun of us.

Alright, thinking that was going to be our only setback...it was only the beginning. All the food was cooked and we were ready to go deliver the food. It was about 4:15ish and the family was expecting us anytime after 330. Since the family is a hispanic family we were nervous they only spoke spanish. Well, across the street from where we were cooking lives one of our spanish professors. So as we were packing up the van with all the food, Professor John was outside sweeping the leaves out of his driveway. Meredith Berger, Natalie Bizzarro (both on the bball team) and I went over to him and asked if he'd like to go with us. (Natalie and I are in the same Spanish class and are going to Spain this summer together=SO EXCITED-but we are NOT fluent yet..so we were nervous and wanted Professor John to come too) He agreed! 15 minutes later 10 of us are in the van Professor John included. We were off to find the house that according to mapquest was only 10 minutes away. We get to the street no problem. We had to find 517. This sounds really simple except that the street ended on 521 and then you had to take a right or left onto another street. The street was cut in half because of railroad tracks. Only in Reading. Professor John jumped out of the car with Coach and they went and asked the neighbors where this 517 house is. Meanwhile we're sitting in this HUGE van in the middle of Reading...keep in mind the streets in Reading are very narrow! They get back into the car and said we had to go over the railroad tracks and the street begins again. So we do just that and we're in the 400's. To make a long story short...we end up driving around this 2 block radius for 2 hours! THe neighbors must have thought we were crazy seeing this huge van go around and around the block. We talked with neighbors, called information and looked up the family-we got a family with the same last name on the phone who spoke solamente espanol (so prof. john talked with them) and they said they knew the family and they lived on 817. We drove by 817 on this street and the lights weren't on and it was dark ,so we didn't get out of the car. A random guy lent us his GPS system. He put it in our van and said he'd follow us..we put in 517 and it brought us right to where we began right next to the 521 house where there was an empty plot of land.

We didn't know where else to go or what else to do and it was getting really late. We had to turn around and go back to school. The night was unbelievable! I was sitting in the front seat with the Turkey on my lap and everytime we went around a sharp corner all the juice came out of the pan and spilt on me. So my jeans were drenched with Turkey juice. We went back to campus showed up at the Dining Hall and asked if we could store all the food there. They are amazing and let us leave it there no problem in freezer #4.

Now you may be thinking well why didn't you call them? I didn't have their number and the following day I called the Hispanic Center and told them what happened. First of all the family doesn't have a phone and second of all the address was 817..there was a mistake. So Monday afternoon Meredith Mayes (the president of SAAC) and I went to the 817 house to see if we could drop the food off that afternoon. They were there and we apologized and said we'd be back at 430. We went back to school, got the food, and dropped it off.

Though this turned into a huge fiasco it was still rewarding in the end.

I'm home now for Thanksgiving. We played Alvernia on Tuesday night and lost by 2. It was a tough one. I drove home right after the game leaving at 10:30 and getting home at 2:30. 4 hours-that was the best time I've ever made! I'm going to go help mom cook since I'm a pro now. (attempt to help her anyway) Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

God Bless

And the season is underway...

The past couple days have been super busy! Friday night after class we left for Muhlenberg for our first game at the Scotty Woods Tipoff Tournament. We played Muhlenberg Friday night and ended up losing and then played Cabrini on Saturday and won! We went 1-1. We should have won both games, but we had A LOT of turnovers and A LOT of fouls. It is a long season, so we have time to improve.

There was something really good that ocurred at the game...my parents surprised me! They drove all the way down from Connecticut to see me! I was soo happy! It is such an amazing feeling to look up into the stands and see your parents there watching you. I love them soo much! They had to get back home after the game so I was only able to chat with them for 15 minutes or so. It was still really nice!

We got back to school around 430 and I spent the rest of the night doing pretty much nothing. The Wizard of Oz was on the Albright Movie Channel so I watched that and fell asleep. It was a glorious nap. Then I didn't feel like doing much of anything so I watched the movie Seven with my best friend Matt. It was the most disturbing movie ever! Very well done, but disturbing! It's about a guy who kills people through the seven deadly sins. I don't want to give it away so you can just imagine...

Then on Sunday SAAC (Student Athletic Advisory Council) made a turkey dinner for a family in Reading who can't afford one. SAAC is made up of athletes on campus and we basically do different functions. We brought a Nutritionist to Albright 2 weeks ago as an Experience Event and we had a GREAT turn out. Since it is the holiday season we thought we'd reach out and do something for the Reading Community. I called the Hispanic Center in Reading who I did some social work with last year for my Spanish Class and asked them if they had a family we could cook Thanksgiving Dinner for. They gave me the name of a 6 person family. A mom, dad, and 4 children. Coach Luck, my coach-the women's basketball coach, is our SAAC advisor and cooked the turkey. This was the first time she'd EVER cooked a turkey...and she did a darn good job. We made mashed potatoes, biscuits, stuffing...everything! It took us all day and then it turned into an adventure. I'm going to have to leave you hanging, so you'll have to check out my next entry

Let's just say athletes+cooking= WOW

until next time
God Bless!

Counting Down the Days...

Thanksgiving Break will be here in 7 days. ONE WEEK. I cannot wait! I can't wait to go home and more importantly I can't wait to not worry about school work for a few days. It is going to be glorious!

Tomorrow I'm registering for classes for the spring semester. Hopefully by next year we'll be able to do it online. Right now we have to do it in person so people camp out there all night or wake up at 4 in the morning. Sleep is definitely more important, so I will not be joining those people. If I get the classes I want, I get them..if not ,I'll fight for them. lol We'll see what happens.

Basketball has been going fairly well. We have our first game this weekend. We are going to a tournament at Muhlenberg...playing Muhlenberg Friday night. I can't wait! There are no words to express how excited I am to get our season completely underway! For our preseason poll we were ranked LAST IN OUR CONFERENCE! 8 out 8! This is completely absurb and as far as I'm concerned we don't need any more motivation than that alone! Our team has to believe in each other and have faith and victory shall be ours. There is no doubt in my mind.

On another note: Machinal debuted this weekend! The show the theater department is putting on. It is soooo good!!! If you have not had a chance to see it yet it's this weekend too....thurs, fri and sat 8 pm. The play itself is excellent and the show is even better. Everyone has put so much hard work into it and let me tell you it has really payed off! Congratulations cast and crew...seriously! and BREAK A LEG this weekend! Love you guys!

Alright it is a gorgeous night so my friend Matt and I are going to run to wawa. I haven't seen the kid in like 2 days. Yay for busy schedules! There is so much to catch up on. It's the gossip walk lol
after wawa I'm hitting the sack. Long day tomorrow, but at least it's a day.

and something to ponder:
the Bible verse for today was....

This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
1 John 3:11

To love each other sounds so simple, but yet why is it so hard? If we loved everyone then we wouldn't have any hate nor violence. What is holding us back?

God Bless!

Questions/Concerns/Problems-RIGHT HERE

Alright some of you have been religious readers of my blog and I appreciate your support. Others have just been dropping by to skim the important events of my everyday life. Alright well this entry is for the Prospective Students and/or the Parents of the Prospective Students:

The whole point of this blog is for you guys to see what college life is like. I try and tell as much as possible about the different clubs I'm involved with as well as how I manage my time with basketball. I know I'm not covering all the aspects, so I wanted to make an entry to cover ONE POINT. If you are a prospective student or parent (because my mom read the bloggers of the students just about everyday when i was in high school-she was hardcore and I know there are other parents just as annoying I mean wonderful as my mother (LOVE YOU MOMMY) then do NOT hesitate to ask me questions or make comments...anything! There is an option on this thing to leave messages for me. Just click on it and ask away. I can answer any questions! To what they served at dinner tonight to what sheets to bring to whether its better to have a desktop comp. or laptop. I know it may be kind of awkward since you don't know me, but I'm asking you to ask me questions!

SO GO FOR IT!

Look forward to hearing from you...

GOD BLESS!

TOO many flavors to choose from...

Alright so maybe I'm not going to do this whole Indivualized Study Program (ISP) thing. I came into Albright not knowing what to do at all, I thought maybe something with communications and/or journalism. Within the past year we've put a big X on that. Don't worry though..it's not like I don't have anything to fall back on. NOW, I have more interests than ever I don't know how to narrow it down! You only get to live once and the thought of having the same job for the rest of my life scares the living daylights out of me. I really should not have 3 concentrations in the ISP program because spanish, sociology, and theater have nothing in common-it would not be a good combo especially when I'm trying to get into Grad School. I guess I'm back to square one. I'm sticking to Sociology and Theater for now and just taking spanish classes. I don't know what to do?! I suppose I have time. So if you're a senior in high school and you don't know what to do either...don't fret because I'm a sophomore in college more lost then ever!

we have registration for this spring semester this week...I don't know what classes I'm going to take I still have to meet with my advisor AGAIN. I'll keep you updated though.

Basketball is going well. We had our first scrimmage against Delaware Valley on Thursday afternoon. It went fairly well. We still have a lot of work to do. We are still in pre-season though.

Classes have been very, very, very busy. I have 3 days of tests in a row so I'm in studying overload.

Not too much to update on. So i'm going to peace out for now. It's Saturday today, Albright lost their last homegame in football by 1 point. Tonight I'm going to Albrights Gospel Choir Concert which should be fun. Other neighboring colleges are coming as well. Then tonight I'm going to see Tartuffe at Penn State Berks for my theater class. We are putting on Tartuffe in the spring so I'm excited to see it!

Alright God Bless everyone!
