The Essay

Read about fifteen applications on Friday. That's a lot of reading! Every application contains at least two recommendations and an essay. I've got to tell you the applications that I remember are those with well written and interesting essay. Recommendations almost always read the same, but a good essay is a breath of fresh air. It breaks up the monotony of reading the same thing over and over and over.

Now I'm a sports buff, but essays on why football or basketball is the most important thing in a student's life get old. Show some creativity! Open up a little in your essay. Express yourself and let us in. There are many opportunities to differentiate your application from all the others, but there is nothing like the essay.

I will keep track of my favorites and list topic titles in a later post.

College fair at Albright tonight. 130 colleges attending. Gotta go setup!

Angelina,

A student that puts thought, effort, and passion into their essay will be successful. My post was not meant make a mockery of the essays that I read. It was meant to inform students that serious thought should be put into anything that is submitted in a college application. Everything that is submitted makes a statement about the applicant.

I challenge all students to write an essay that causes me to walk down the hall to show it to a coworker or to write the student telling them how much I enjoyed reading it.
