Planes, Games and Automobiles
Planes:
Spent last week in Tampa, Florida attending the annual conference for the National Association for College Admission Counselors. It is always great to catch up with old friends and is a an invaluable networking opportunity. Over 4,000 college admission and high school counselors attended this year's conference to discuss, educate and debate issues concerning college admission.
I most struggle with what the mission of college admission is all about. We have an ethical obligation to serve the best interests of students. However, this obligation sometimes conflicts with the obligation that we have to our institutions. What is best for an indivdual student, may not be best for the institution. This leads to discussion, debate and disagreement among my peers. While I don't agree with how all my peers do business; I can only ask that we do it honestly. Being honest with students, parents and counselors is the only way to deal with conflicting obligations.
Games:
I started working at Albright in the fall of 1997. The fall is full of early mornings in an attempt to get to the 8:00 am high school visit. It sometimes means leaving the house at 5:30 am to beat traffic. Well, the New York Yankees (my favorite team) have made that fall 5:30 am wakeup extremely difficult over the past eight years. Every fall the Yankees make the post season and every fall I have to stay up and watch the games. I wouldn't have it any other way:-). Yanks 4 Angels 2!
Automobiles:
Last week I was in Paterson NJ, Scranton PA, Clifton NJ, Elizabethtown PA, Norristown PA and several other areas trying to find the best students for Albright. Wawas, Starbucks, and Barnes and Nobles are my friends. My cell phone and Blackberry keep my connected with work and family.
Had a great conversation with a group of students from Brandywine High School last week. Thanks for being an attentive and inquizative group!
11:41 pm. Have to be in Boyertown PA at 8:00 am. Good Night!
